Taylor Swift tries to trademark “Swiftmas,” “Blank Space,” “1989”

This is just so ridiculous that it's hilarious. I was born in 1989 - in actual fact, Taylor was born just 2 days before me (birthday on Tuesday!). That's as alike as we'll ever get. Guess I'd better get that birth certificate, passport and other legal documents changed. She'll be trademarking oxygen next. No wonder she wanted a part in The Lorax - because buying oxygen is precisely what happens in the movie! It must've inspired her!

But seriously, the legal system had better give this overgrown spoilt child a reality check and put her on a time out. It amazes me how she's still gaining fans despite all this.

lmfaoo she's trademarking 1989 in terms of her album. So people can't make shirts and stuff with the term "1989" in it in relation to her music.

It's so funny watching Gaga stans tear her every move apart and then get mad at watching other people tear gaga down.

It's fine to be a Taylor fan, but to approve what she is trying to do here is just ****ing messy and sad :rip:

Also, don't bring Gaga into this, because when people tear her down it's for no reason. What Taylor is trying to do is CRAZY :smh:

The original source is weird. You can't just trademark album/song titles like that. Blank Space and 1989 will never work, especially since there are a lot of songs (pre-Taylor) and multiple albums with that name, one by Ryan Adams in 2015 (which is a cover album ok, but still, how could that work legally), so... The others would though.

This might be interesting:

"Fiona McBride, a trademark lawyer at Withers & Rogers, told the BBC Swift's latest bid may not be successful.

"While she may well be granted protection for a stylised use of the number 1989 on her album and distinctive terms such as "Swiftmas", it will be very difficult to completely monopolise a song lyric and prevent others from using it," she said.

"To be granted trademark protection, brand owners need to prove a term or image is unique to their identity. 1989 as part of a stylised logo or script on Taylor Swift's album cover is iconic and in that format, is easily recognisable as individual to her music.

"'Swiftmas' is also a distinct term that she could achieve successful registration for as it is unique to her name and brand.

"On the other hand, her attempts to trademark song lyrics are no more than a publicity stunt."

Ms McBride added it would be more difficult to obtain trademark protection in the EU market."

Watch out for the Ego monster, i seriously hope this is not true, because this person is really becoming delusional, how does she even think and she could own rights to the general expression as blank space, and the entire year? She might be american mtv pop star, but still there are people who dont care  of her att all, and still we should associate words we use in our every day life, with pop singer and stupid song? no and no

I don't have an issue with Taylor, but this seems a tad bit...excessive. I can understand it's likely for merchandising and such, and I'm sure other artists do similar things, but certain common phrases and years shouldn't be trade-marked, I feel. Especially a year, but maybe it's meant to be trade-marked in reference to the album only? I hope so.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

i'm really over her and her fans.1989 is a decent album and all but good lord. even if it is a publicity stunt, it's childish.

john green/hank green have a slogan for their community, DFTBA, as well as other catchphrases and such and they don't trademark them because it hurts their fans making fan art. i admire them for that.
