It's my personal opinion but I think that the problem with the singers you take as example in the opening post is that they lack charisma huge popstars like Gaga, Madonna or even Katy, have, and they songs are kinda dull. I do not think it has to do with the overtly sexual themes of their songs/videos.

Also, sex might sell the first time, but once you've done it, then it's not surprising anymore... You either have to change your strategy or wait a long time....

The exception to the rule being the Kardashian family, I really don't know how they do it, tbh.....

But I'm only a man and I do what I can.

Well, sex in music will get boring after a while.

I'm all here for it when it's not done only for controversy. For example, I love how Gaga expresses her sexuality and femininity.

I hate it when nudity is considered shocking or even offensive, it's so stupid.

They say it's the last song. They don't know us, you see. It's only the last song if we let it be.

Miley and Demi have never been sexy, even if they try hard they are just not what you call sexy. Provocative and sexy are two different things. Nude and sexy are two different things.

Selena Gomez is doing great and the sneak peek of her upcoming video was everywhere two days ago.

Many things affected Ariana Grande this time. Many people hate her because of what she said about Americans and what she did. The song is not as good as her other songs and the male voice is quite annoying. Her album was scheduled to come out in 2016 even before Focus was released so I don't think it's being delayed. She has been posting snippets.

Sex is obviously not selling as much as it did in other years but it's still selling.

Does success mean youtube views?

Success means people talks about it. If people talks about it they're gonna watch it on YouTube

YouTube views are money and popularity which could basically mean success.

Miley Cyrus's new record is very uncommercial.

Ariana's new single has been met with negative reviews and is considered to be notably lesser in quality than her previous singles.

Selena Gomez is not struggling to get hits at all.

Demi only had one major hit off of her last record (Heart Attack), and Cool for the Summer isn't as noticeably lesbian as I Kissed a Girl.

It has nothing to do with sex not selling. It never really has. It all depends on how commercial/quality the music is.

Even if sex is a bit overrated, it still sells, don't worry.

"Selena Gomez is still struggling to get big hits"

didn't she just have two songs in the iTunes top 10 at the same time?

People will buy music they like. Find me consecutive years where the best selling albums were about sex. It's just a theme. Sexuality has been used in pop for decades now but it's doing the same amount as it ever has. You know nothing as always.

Sex has always been a part of music, it's just that nowadays it's so blatant and in-your-face that it's just too much and maybe people are sick of it. It's not even sexy anymore, just trashy and desperate, as is the case with Miley. If sex is incorporated in a subtle, tasteful way, then I see nothing wrong with it.
