It's a Woman's Industry Again

I think we've got a way to go before it can be considered a woman's industry again. And these are just US charts. In the UK, JB's just had his third consecutive #1 (WDYM - 5 weeks, Sorry - 2 weeks, Love Yourself - 1 week) and actually displaced himself at the top. Uptown Funk also was #1 for 6 weeks this year and OMI and Jason Derulo were #1 for 4 weeks respectively. Then there was also Wiz/Charlie, Sam Smith, 1D and more. 17 out of the 23 UK #1's this year were by males (and they are the headliners, not even features). Ellie Goulding, Jess Glynne, Little Mix, Rachel Platten and Adele are the only females to get a #1 this year (Jess also featured on a male's #1 and Katy B was part of a male feature on another #1). On the plus side, apart from Rachel, they all had multiple weeks at the top (and Jess had 2 solo #1's) which is something. But it could be a sign that a female year is imminent, when the public get too bored of one gender's voice everywhere. We've had male focused years for the last 2 years too. It's really weird to not see Rihanna at the top of the charts here anymore. It's even weird to see Ariana not taking off. And naturally, I miss the days of Gaga at #1. It seems now that when a woman gets to the top, she's either only popular for one album or is a one hit wonder. It's sad.

I hate male-dominated years. Wasnt 2012 a male year? Or was that just a string of 1 hit wonders?

Bring on the ladies!

Gaga, Katy, Kesha (crossing my fingers), Rihanna, everyone really.

2012 was actually the year of the women and duo/groups. Adele, Rihanna and Taylor Swift were the top three artists that year, according to Billboard. Drake and Justin Bieber were numbers 4 and 5, respectively. Then Nicki Minaj and Katy Perry came in at #6 and #7, followed by Maroon 5, LMFAO and One Direction (which you could argue are all men).

Just to make it easier to read

1) Adele

2) Rihanna

3) Taylor Swift

4) Drake

5) Justin Bieber

6) Nicki Minaj

7) Katy Perry

8) Maroon 5

9) LMFAO

10) One Direction

Of the top 10 songs of 2012, 5 were by women (Carly Rae Jepsen, Ellie Goulding, Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj), 4 were by groups (fun., Maroon 5, The Wanted, and One Direction) and Gotye was the one male.

Love that you're crossing your fingers for Kesha. Rooting for her so much!

Yes, I'm very excited !!!

I mean, men in music are very boring and all the same most of the time...

I feels like there is pressure only put on women to actually fight for their songs and do a lot of promo, and they are pitted against each other, that doesn't happen to male artists like at all

So yes, female artists, bring it on !!!
