FATCAT 58,944
While she is currently very popular with sales and praise, we also have to realize that NSYNC held the record for most first-week sales for a good while, but most kids these days know nothing about them. Even they know of Micheal or Whitney or Britney. I can't be free if my hands are tied... 🧟♀️👰🏻
Warholian 6,880
We'll see. I would say she's the greatest since Madonna but only time will tell if she can last (which I expect she will) Kevin Parker, Mac Demarco, Mark Ronson, and a stoned Lady Gaga. Need I say more? Felicia 124
Biggest Legend EVER? Not a chance. Not even close. "Ever" is a long long time. In the world of Pop Music history that includes Sinatra, Elvis and The Beatles--Adele isn't even on the same planet. Serendipity 7,821
2 hours ago, Daydream said: I feel like people have a fixed mindset about what a legend is. It's not just iconic performances or cultural impact. Madonna and Michael Jackson are pop legends. Don't get me wrong, they can both hold a tune, but no one thinks of them as singers or vocalists. They are merely entertainers and performers and they are amazing at it. However, people often forget that Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Céline Dion are legends too, predominantly due to their voices. They have no cultural impact or iconic performances, but they still achieved longevity and a signature sound. Although, Mariah Carey did start to switch it up in the late '90s by experimenting with hip-hop, but it took her approximately eight years to be comfortable in exploring a completely different genre. Her prior albums before Butterfly (1998) all had the same sounds, which were only ballads. However, just because these women lacked cultural impact, it does not take away the great voices they each had. I should also mention that these women have influenced many of today's contemporary singers, from Beyoncé, to Christina Aguilera, to Kelly Clarkson, and to Ariana Grande. With that being said, I don't see why people doubt that Adele can be a vocal legend like these women just because the majority of her songs are ballads, had no cultural impact, or because she has not done anything considered "iconic." As for longevity, only time will tell, but her sales have also proven that she has the potential to reach longevity. Adele may not push boundaries, but we must also remember that Adele appeared at a time where s-x, edm auto-tune productions, controversies, and gimmicks were overshadowing talent in the music industry. After her 21 era, coincidentally, many people were more drawn to vocal artists and ballad-type songs that were performed by Sam Smith, Bruno Mars, A Great Big World, etc. Hell, even Rihanna released a ballad, "Stay," when she could have chosen way more uptempo or upbeat edm songs from her Unapologetic album. Three years later, Adele is back and her song "Hello" and album 25 have broken records that seemed impossible in a generation that does not buy music. Even her video has broken records without the cliché use of s-x, controversy, cameos, or high budget productions. Therefore, I think that Adele is not a pop legend, but she definitely has the potential to be a vocal legend in the same vain as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Céline Dion. She has the voice, the talent, the acclaim, the Grammys, the sales, and the dedicated fans. All she is missing is longevity, because she is only on her third studio album. But I can't with people on this forum that are quick to dismiss her or discredit her... That's all. Mariah did have impact tho She literally made melisma mainstream See talent here-->http://bit.ly/2eqeUxK
chiuga 1,952
sorry but she's still not a legend. N'sync is not a legend in the same principle (they have had huge sales for a few albums). Legends do not necessitate huge sales. it's about the impact and influence of their entire body of work. not a couple of big performances, albums, songs or pieces of works. the legendary status of an artist is usually determined after their peaks when people start to look back on their contribution to the musical landscape. at this point, she's just another huge seller /great vocalist who's unstoppable at the moment but her output is not unseen before (essentially they are just a collection of personal nostalgic ballads). Mister Gaga 22,031
Well, in this case, i'd tell that her music is legendary. It might sound strange, but she doesn't have like Madonna's / Michael Jackson's (even Gaga's) visual personas. Her music and her success (due to her music, not her persona) will remain in history for ever.

Are you sure you are not just referring to old has-beens? Adele is obviously bigger, radios actually play her and ppl know the lyrics to her songs. Quark 7,085
o<(0_0)>o I have seen that many people are already calling Adele a legend after the commercial success of 25 and her previous albums. But sales alone to not make an artist a legend. Sales only represent the fact that many people like your music. But a true legend has impact, influence, and iconic moments on top of sales. Many artists in the past have sold lots and lots of records, and yet many of those artists are no where to be seen both on the charts and or in people's minds. Now, Adele has vocal talent, and lots of success, and she may even become a legend one day. But, as of right now, she has no single iconic moment, and she hasn't really brought in anything artistically new or innovative in the music industry. Artists like the Beatles, MJ, and even in occasion Gaga, have outdone Adele in these field.
Brooke Hoegan 1,018
Well not exactly sales, but they are an important factor of relevancy And relevancy ~=~ legend, people must remember you and your songs for you to become a music legend So, especially these days, a huge hit at least every 2 years really seems like a must... hmmm, someone should step up their game
