Not surprised at them going to #1 but shocked by the sales. They couldn't even get 100k and they were only less than 3k ahead of Justin! They're British, they've sold several million albums and singles in the UK, their tours have all sold millions in the UK, they had a #1 and #2 single this era, they performed on X Factor 2 days after the release and there was 5 different covers available for obsessed fans to collect. And it's just over a month until Christmas. With all that taken into account, those sales are very worrying. Looks like Zayn leaving was more of a blow than originally thought. Olly Murs debuted at #1 this time last year with the same amount of sales and he's big in the UK but not as big at 1D. For their first 3 albums, 1D's sales just got better and better. But ever since Four, they've taken a downfall:

UK debut week sales

Up All Night - 138,000

Take Me Home - 155,000

Midnight Memories - 237,000

Four - 142,000

Made In The A.M. - 93,000

To think people called Gaga a flop for selling 67k here with AP. Little did we know a lot of other artists were about to suffer the same fate and worse and that even boybands who always sell guaranteed millions were going to take a battering. The top 5 best UK debut sales of 2015 is so depressing. Adele and Coldplay will even it up, I'm sure, but it's depressing to think that until late November, no one had managed to debut with 100k or more. In 2011 and 2012, artists, even new ones and older ones, were debuting with 100k or more left and right.

They are on a slow descent, but I did read an article the other day about boybands are all on a bit of a slope down so it does seem like the best time for them to take a break. They emerged just as boybands (in the U.K.) were peaking in popularity again, and since then they've been riding that wave still pretty strongly but a general decrease in sells for all of them indicates that the public are moving on a bit.

I mean even Take That has been struggling recently and it's Take That! Arguably the most loved boyband (depending how one would class The Beatles) in the U.K. so it's been coming for a while.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they're received after their break.

Agreed. 5SOS had singles that barely made a dent worldwide and even though they went to #1, their album fell to #17 in its second week in the UK. I think their heavier sound was too much for their young, popcentric fans. The Vamps couldn't even get their lead single in the top 10 and their album got delayed by nearly a month and isn't predicted to do well (this was a band who just had 4 top 10's with their last album the year before). Let's not even bring up Union J, Rixton and the blink-and-you'll-miss-it Stereo Kicks. Boybands are dying a death right now, with 1D and Take That appearing to be the last ones standing. I bet all the other groups are annoyed that 1D decided to take their break in the same year as they might have been planning to take one. Now they'll have to make use of their time out of the spotlight to attempt to take over. But it won't really matter anymore because it's clear that the world has had just about enough of boybands by this stage. The market got too over-saturated with wannabe 1D's. There wasn't even a pop-centred boyband on the X Factor at any stage this year. Even Simon must know that it's a trend the public isn't feeling anymore. And considering he tried to make the next 1D the very next year after their conception, if he's no longer got faith in boybands, I think it's safe to assume the trend's about to go dormant for another few years.

But whatever, 1D have done amazingly well. They made me eat my hat with their continued success in singles, albums, tour dates, everything. Very few boybands make it to 5 albums (and potentially more to come). Most call it quits after album #3. So, they've made history, and for that, they'll always be remembered.
