MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO/AP) — Protesters with Black Lives Matter shut down Interstate 94 near downtown Minneapolis for several hours Monday night.

Hundreds of protesters blocked the westbound side of the highway from 7th St. to Broadway. It’s in response to the officer-involved shooting of Jamar Clark.

I disapprove of what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it.

I always imagine like what if you need to rush to a hospital and those people block the highway. Imagine you get a kid but can't go to the hospital or you have an heart attack :rip:

Or what if you have urgent appointments like a job meeting or/and stuff like that.

In the age of the internet there is no reason to protest in such a negatively disruptive way. You don't need to disrupt daily life to get your message to spread across the country in the news. Twitter, Facebook, Yotube, Instagram, etc. are the tools they should be using. Their message will spread quicker and more people will listen rather than be angered by the disruption and cause hate towards your cause.

Yes, because trending a hashtag is going to do something and nobody has trended #BlackLivesMatter before.

Huh? BLM started on social media. And apparently they do need to disrupt daily life because there is barely anyone listening and black people are still getting shot, beat up, and killed by the police at a high rate.

Right. And the racist is going to change their mind because protesters blocked their way to work/school/the hospital?

Good idea.

No need to arrest them. Just keep driving everyone.

What else are they to do? Protests are used to change government policy. The point is not to change the racist mind just as LGBT protests are not there to change the homophobes mind... There will always be racists/ignorant people. Is a hashtag going to change that?

Okay hold on.

This man was reported as assaulting his girlfriend, and when police arrived he was fighting the EMTs to prevent them from taking her into the ambulance.

I do NOT believe he should have been shot and killed, but FFS is anyone else concerned about the abuse his girlfriend went through?!

WHAT?! Of course protests are about changing peoples' minds. If a protester blocks my way to work I'm FAR more likely to get angry and them and fight against whatever they want. LGBT protestors never blocked any highways and we are far more persecuted in the U.S. and have actual laws written against us unlike racial minority that are protected by the constitution. We advance progress by changing peoples' minds. You're really really misguided on this.

Nope. BLM doesn't care that police had to use force against a violent grown man that also beat his girlfriend. All they are about is that a cop shot a black man.

The "organization" doesn't bother itself with petty "facts".

Here's the thing- in this situation it does seem like both people were in the wrong. There have been other cases where it so obviously was a police officer acting out of line (and if you disagree watch the Sandra Bland video and try again), but this is one where I believe arresting the suspect was totally fine.

However, we also have a scenario where people are saying a handcuffed man was shot in the head. Regardless of whether or not he was guilty, it is not a police officer's job to KILL someone. With the man dead we are less likely to have a fair trial regarding his history with his girlfriend.

While I'm bothered no one is asking about the history with the girlfriend, I'm also bothered by the fact that the police didn't act appropriately.

Appointments are screwed, but that would happen if there was a huge wreck or anything else that closed the highway down...which happens on occasion everywhere.

There is an emergency lane. You turn on your emergency blinkers and use the emergency lane to get to the next exit and take another way. For a heartattack, you go to a hospital close by. Most people don't have to get on a highway to get to a hospital. Suburbs of major cities have hospitals. Or you call 911, which most people do with a heart attack.
