It is everything that contemporary pop could be, but isn't. It encompasses everything that I've come to love about her as an artist: it has imagination, atmosphere, philosophy, humor, sass, energy to spare, and a lot of heart. The production is on-point and fully dimensional (sounding pristine on large and small speakers), and the songwriting has many of her sharpest melodies and most irresistible choruses. No one else could have possibly made this record, and I can't think of a better compliment to give an artist. One of the very few members here who can always give a very informed, professional opinion on this masterpiece. :legend: Such discussion near ARTPOP's 2-year anniversary makes me feel nostalgic. To be honest I've listened to many great albums after ARTPOP but it gave me such a bang when it got released... I desperately need that experience again in my life. It was so exhilarating and it is yet to be matched! LG5, anyone?
VasilisVas 5,172
Haven't listened to the album in over a years and I'm totally ok with that. By far the most underwhelming Gaga album.
LoveandMagic 1,731
I don't hate ARTPOP. I do like it and think it's a good album, but it took a while for it to grow on me, and that might have been due to what I expected of the album itself and my incredibly high expectations after Born This Way (which is such a masterpiece), as well as the passion Gaga seemed to have for it in the beginning. Here's the thing, the way Gaga spoke about it I think I was expecting something really stressing an experimental, modernist, artsy side of her (in the musical sense, if that makes any sense). Something maybe both futuristic with some psychedelic/experimental vibe, maybe with a trancey, raver feel. Some sampling of classical and other cultural elements as well. Something kind of avant-garde like the fashion she was known for. I also expected a higher than normal visual component of her. I would have loved if she would have made music videos for many of the songs of the album, even if they were only released on the album itself as part of the album package. I liked some of the themes we got, but I didn't think they were utilized well (or hardly any). To me, what we got felt like a big step backward creatively, with only just a sprinkle or hint of something more innovative. Having said that, I think it's a great party album, it's a lot of fun and I very much enjoyed many of the songs on there (Aura, Venus, DWUW, GUY, MJH, Gypsy, Applause, and MANiCURE are very listenable to me) and, as with all her albums, can pretty much listen to it with only skipping one or two tracks. I'm pretty sure it was my favorite pop release that year Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
