Fiona Apple 13,006
Well commercially it was definitely the album of the year
Fiona Apple 13,006
I'm still not so sure she will win... The album is definetely (one of the) best pure Pop albums of the year, but I really wouldn't count out Florence and the Machine or The Weeknd... the Grammys are trying their best to not be as predictable as people are painting them out to be #Beck2k15 ... Anyway, she has that Pop album of the year on lock though... Whatever success comes her way, she has had an unbelievable year, commercially speaking, so she doesn't have to feel bad and buy In-N-Out burger this time The Weeknd's album is not good though

djBuffoon 12,123
I like 1989 a lot. But if that is the album already favored to win, months before the ceremony, then it has been a very weak year.
gagaisitalian 3,573
1989 is one of the most cohesive pop albums to come out in the past decade. People can call it "basic" and "lame", but it truly isn't. There's an underlying theme throughout it that doesn't dissolve away, it features a lot of classic 80s sounds without trying too hard, and it's full of bops...and this is all coming from a once-country singer. Whispering 18,865
It depends on what other albums are nominated. Beyoncé didn't win because three of the five nominated albums were R&B type albums, so they split the vote. I would say that 1989 has a good shot at the award, but you never know with the Grammy voters, as they don't always go for the obvious choices. It probably did with all the drama pop queens huddled at places like ATRL. The Grammy for AOTY is not awarded for "cultural impact" anyhow.
StrawberryBlond 14,898
The very fact that she's hailed as the favourite makes her even more likely to NOT win. Every time Grammy season rolls around, the most obvious choice hardly ever wins. It took me a while to work out what it really is the Grammys are looking for but I've sussed it now and am surprised that no one else seems to.The Grammys are not about awarding the most commercially successful or the most culturally significant. Which is odd, as most people put down the Grammys for doing exactly this, leaving lesser successes and superior artists in the dust. I don't know why they think this because most of the time, the least expected option wins. Sure, the nomination process is all about submitting the biggest successes, but the actual deciding of the winner is nothing to do with that. Hence AOTY being given to the likes of Alison Krauss & Robert Plant, Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, Arcade Fire, Beck, etc. Among many others. For the first few decades, the most successful album usually won, but around the 90's, the winners took a notable turn. Suddenly, it was much older artists and live unplugged albums that won. There would be an occasional obvious choice like Jagged Little Pill or 21, but ever since the 90's, the criteria about what makes AOTY has clearly changed in the academy's eyes. Since 2007, with the exception of Adele and Mumford & Sons, every album that's won was NOT the most successful of the nominations. Almost a straight, unbroken decade of lesser successes winning - think about that. Considering that Adele won in 2012 and M&S won in 2013, I doubt they'd pick another obvious choice so soon.If anything, Taylor's change towards being a definite pop act is actually what goes against her winning. As you've seen by her Grammy history, the academy aren't as keen on her pop work. Red didn't win anything and 1989 hasn't won anything so far despite SIO being one of the biggest hits of the year. You'll notice that even with Fearless and Speak Now, the songs she won the awards for were always her most "country" ones (songs like You Belong With Me and Breathe were also nominated in pop categories). She has never won a Grammy for any of her pure pop songs. So, do you think they'd award her for a whole album of pure pop songs? Quite simply, the choice is too obvious and I think the Grammys want a run of unexpected wins for a while. Besides, Taylor's already won. That fact alone counts against her as it's virtually impossible to win twice these days.

Just because it's 'cohesive' or 'pure' doesn't mean it's good. Yeah it's pop, but it isn't quality pop. There isn't any 80s sound in the album whatsoever. Just because Taylor says it is doesn't mean it is true. Your Candy Perfume Girl
LoveandMagic 1,731
Honestly I could see her winning. She's had a very good era, the album and tour are doing amazing, and just a quick wikipedia search shows good critical response with 1989. I'm not saying it's a sure thing, but it's very likely I feel. But again, just being nominated is an honor. :) Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."
