"Poot Lovato" is the slightly deranged, utterly ridiculous conspiracy theory that only the internet could dream up. And it started with one very awkward photo of Demi Lovato, a woman who is by and large stunning — girl even has a modeling contract to her name — but has her bad angles, too. We all do. But rather than deleting the photo, the person who took it uploaded it to the internet, blogs took hold of it, and the rest was history.

We talked to two professional photographers about the multiple variables at play here, and they both agree on what exactly went wrong.

"Red carpets are nightmares for photographers and videographers," says Jeff Meltz, who has taken portraits of over 100 people for one project alone (so you know he knows his stuff). "If you watch them as a viewer, all you see is a rave-worthy amount of camera flashes, but if you're also filming or photographing while that's happening, the flashes play tricks on camera and video sensors and you can get these seriously weird, degraded images and frames."

Chayanne Joël, who also specializes in portraits, added that "when all the press flashes going off, that's already enough of a challenge. Then you have all the fans with their iPhones going off and DSLRs going off, and that creates all kinds of extra light. So when you have a low-quality camera, it's going to overexpose every flaw in the photo and then catch motion and catch everyone else's flash."
