Leo 3,000
In a historic move, the Northern Irish Assembly voted with a majority yes vote today to pass a bill to allow same-s-x marriages to take place in this country, as well as to accept and acknowledge same-s-x marriages performed elsewhere. BUT, the yes vote was blocked, by a Petition of Concern. Put simply, this means that a yes vote can be vetoed. Today, the government here voted yes. But the bill has been blocked, and same-s-x marriage remains illegal. Marriages performed in the rest of the UK will not be acknowledged as legal marriage here either. This is the fifth time since 2012 that this vote has been denied, but the very first time that there has been a majority yes vote. The bill can be put forward again in another 6 months, as is the legal waiting period, but despite changes, the same political party is likely to block it again. Northern Ireland remains behind England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland in terms of marriage equality. This is ****ed up So close yet so far. Mobster 14,604
How frustrating... I can't believe we still live in a world where the majority can decide over the rights of a minority...EDIT: Not even the majority in this case But I'm only a man and I do what I can. MonsterForLife 407
I don't think I get it. What went wrong? Edit: How can a petition block a yes vote?

Leo 3,000
I don't think I get it. What went wrong? The government voted "Yes" for equality. But the way politics work here, a party can come forward and say "No" and the yes doesn't count. So the final verdict was "No".

Haroon 49,685
What bittersweet news I mean it's still made progress in the fact that it's the first time it's a majority vote and hopefully from now on each time it's voted on it'll be a majority vote, but that darn veto thing is a mess and needs to be sorted out. I don't really understand what it is or how it works, but it seems rather ridiculous

Leo 3,000
I don't how any project can go forward if parties can block the decision, like...Politics over here are...complicated. The mechanism was designed to stop inequality, because parties here can be very opposed, but most people agree that this party is abusing their power here in a very unfair way. Many people here want a referendum.
