Didymus 34,380
When people are dying, they are often ‘visited’ by visions of dead friends and relatives - which offer comfort in our final hours. As death approaches, the visits become more and more common. The phenomenon has been widely reported, but up until now, has rarely been studied - although scientists are still unaware of what causes the visions. Scientists from Canisius College, New York interviewed 66 patients receiving end-of-life care in a hospice. The research – into a common, but little-studied phenomenon – found that most patients reported at least one such vision per day. Many patients said the visits ‘felt real’ – and that visions involving dead friends and relatives were the most common. The researchers write, ‘As participants approached death, comforting dreams/visions of the deceased became more prevalent, ‘The impact of pre-death experiences on dying individuals and their loved ones can be profoundly meaningful… ‘These visions can occur months, weeks, days, or hours before death and typically lessen fear of dying, making transition from life to death easier for those experiencing them.’ Source Discuss. SweetEscape 654
I guess people have visions like these coz they are searching for comfort in familiar faces, they want to feel safe and not be afraid of what happens after death.
BornSimon 4,832
Just a few hours before my father died he told me his own father was standing in front of him and telling him it was ok for him to go.I don't consider myself a believer, but I have stopped asking myself questions because it is a matter of deciding what to believe in, not what is real and what isn't, because we have no way of knowing the absolute truth. I suppose I'll find out what this all means once I'm gone.

For some reason it gives me shivers all over. It's the unknown that we are afraid of and it does loom and I agree that the best way to deal with it, is stop asking questions about it. It most likely is 'nothing' which is morbid but the creation of after-life, I feel, is the human mind reacting to the inability to comprehend the idea of 'nothing'. The brain just can't understand the idea of 'nothing' for eternity so people create something (as the OP said) to find peace with death. This is what I believe anyway. Thank you for your wordsI don't think you ever really get over it. My father died in 2006 and this year my mother died too, which was much harded as I had a far better relationship with her than I did with my dad. But I guess you just learn to live with it, and try to understand that they wouldn't want to see you depressed and neglecting those around you. It takes time, but eventually you get there. I agree with what you said, I think the idea that there might be nothing after life, just eternal sleep, is what scares people the most, and that's why they feel the need to create something that comforts them, something that makes them think they will be reunited with their loved ones. I honestly don't know what to think, I spent my teenagehood fighting the idea of an after-life, but then again we are only human and we have no idea, we can only rationally decide what we believe in and then get to the very last day still wondering what the hell is about to happen to us. Haroon 49,685
This is very comforting actually, I do hope that when I'm slipping into death that I see all the loved ones that have passed before me
Melech 9,900
I had a dream about my dead grandfather visiting me shortly after he died and saying that he is okay. Maybe it's something close to that too. He died in 2007, so that's long time ago, so I doubt i will die.

The Child 18,997
My grand father who had lung cancer visited my mother in the middle of the night and I truly believe her cause the next day he died.So yeah I believe when dying people are visited by familar faces. ‘If religion be the cause of disunity, then irreligion is surely to be preferred.’ ‘Abdu’l-Bahá

Christine T 3
Hello, I'm an Englishwoman in my late fifties, and came across this site this afternoon, after having been reading the posts on this article on another site. And thus thought I'd post some words, here, too, after having read the comments so far, here.Firstly, however, I must make it clear that I'm most definitely NOT any form of "Christian" (nor am I a Muslim, Hindu, etc); however, since October 1994 I most definitely AM (factually) spiritually-enlightened (for being "religious" and being spiritually-enlightened are, in the main, two completely different things). These experiences by those who are "dying" are NOT imaginary!! They are very, very real. We all DO survive (in our eternal, immortal soul/spirit form) the very illusory event that's so very wrongly termed "death".When, in October 1994, I came across, in my then local library in London, here in the UK, a book which piqued my interest, it acted as a catalyst: causing me to initiate a very extensive, indepth, very scholarly programme of research into whether there MIGHT exist objective evidences supporting the claim that we survive [in soul form] the death of our physical body "coat". In the 21 years since then, I've carried out a very great deal of scholarly research into what happens to be this ultimate life-truth, including my having read more than 750 (seven hundred and fifty+) excellent, high-quality, scholarly books on the veracity of this: that we DO all survive (in our eternal, immortal soul/spirit form) the very illusory, very misinterpreted "death".I should make the point, here, that of the many thousands of excellent books written relating the very real truth of this, a large percentage have been written by educated, PROPERLY-informed scientists, doctors, psychiatrists, etc etc. They who have discovered, through indepth research, that the ACTUAL nature of the event given the term "death" is so very, very different from what It merely seems to be, when interpreted at its very illusory face-value mere appearance. There are a number of reasons why we do all survive (in soul/spirit form) that illusory event. One being that we in fact live in a multi-dimensional cosmos. Ie, that there is far, far more to reality/existence than merely what we can see and hear with the physical eyes and ears. There exist, in very real truth, spiritual dimensions of this multi-dimensional cosmos - and it is this spiritual dimension we all return to, after the transitional event that's wrongly been called "death". A second reason we do survive that event is this: that, contrary to what the majority of the mainstream, materialistic scientific establishment merely assume, the mind/consciousness is NOT "merely a by-product of physical brain activity". In actual fact, the non-physical mind/consciousness is completely separate from the 'mere' physical brain - the non-physical mind/consciousness operates/manifests THROUGH the physical brain, yes, but it is NOT created BY the physical brain. Countless millions of educated, properly-informed people, worldwide, have researched, in great depth, the veritable wealth of multi-faceted, objective evidences which demonstrate that we do all survive "death". And one of the many facts re. survival of 'death' and of the very real existence of the afterlife is that everyone IS collected by a [wrongly-termed] "deceased" family member or friend, at the time of their "death", and that [one or more] "dead" relatives then accompany their newly-"dead" relative back to the very real spirit dimension.People on earth who possess the very real spiritual gift of clairvoyant vision also are able to see these "deceased" people who come to collect their "dying" family member, when the latter is about to do what is so very wrongly termed "die".So no, the afterlife is NOT a fabricated thing; it exists, in very real truth, for everyone. I know, but how else would you explain it? I mean, I'm not sure I believe all that near death experiences are actually real.
