I don't think you can make religious institutions believe in what you believe in. As long as the beliefs of religious institutions don't become laws, I'm okay with them thinking differently than me...as long as they keep it in their church. 

I could not support a candidate that felt this way, though.

And many churches are changing.  This year two big announcements.  Episcopalian Chruch and one faction of the Presbyterian Church recognizing gay marriage, even to the dismay of many members.  It started out that their sermons were never derogatory and welcomed gay members, trying to become inclusive, although not going as far as sanctioning gay marriage.  It's now gone further.    In my town now if a member or members are gay and want to be married in the church, they will marry them.   A protestant church did this, the Presbyterian church.  Times are changing.  It won't change for the Baptist Church, etc., but who would ever have thought other denominations would make such strides by putting it in their bylaws or constitution.  They aren't going to force their clergy to perform a marriage, though.  So it depends on the minister.  I guess that was done so as not to totally lose all of their ministers or congregations in certain areas..  But it's a huge step forward in officially recognizing gay marriage and risk losing a lot of members.

The Presbyterian Church (USA) made a historic decision Tuesday night to formally recognize gay marriage and allow same-s-x couples to marry in its congregations.

The largest Presbyterian denomination in the U.S. voted to redefine the church constitution on marriage to include “a commitment between two people, traditionally a man and a woman,” the New York Times reports.

The vote, which was approved by a majority of the church’s 171 regional bodies (or presbyteries), cements a recommendation made last year by its General Assembly. As of Tuesday night, the vote stood at 87 presbyteries in favor to 41 against with one tied.

“Finally, the church in its constitutional documents fully recognizes that the love of gays and lesbian couples is worth celebrating in the faith community,” Rev. Brian D. Ellison, executive director of the Covenant Network of Presbyterians, which advocates for the inclusion of gay people in the church, told the Times."

 

The Episcopal Church also.

 

"The U.S. Episcopal Church has voted to change the church's rules governing marriage and to authorize their clergy to perform same-s-x weddings, days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to legalize gay marriage for all Americans.

In two of the resolutions adopted at the General Convention meeting in Salt Lake City this week, the denomination made a canonical change eliminating language defining marriage as between a man and a woman as well as authorized two new marriage rites with language allowing them to be used by same-s-x or opposite-s-x couples.  
The terms "man and woman" have been replaced with "couple."

I feel like he's trying to play both sides of the matter, saying he believes in traditional marriage so that the religious people are on his side, but also saying that gays are protected so that he doesn't ostracize the LGBT voters
