Morphine Prince 109,994
Community colleges in the US provide quality education. That's what you would get for free. You wouldn't get the colleges like what you see at Indiana University or Auburn for free. Both can be a quality education, they are just very different. If you want to invision what free education would be like, go check out a community college. They still have quality teachers, classrooms, labs, libraries, etc. I attend a university but have taken some classes at community college over the summer so I have experience in both. I see the difference and I think it would be a great idea for CC's to be free. However, my initial question was about other nations. Germany for example, has no tuition, right? I'm sure a lot of German universities are very good quality. Why couldn't universities here do something similar? Is it too much to ask for the US? They could, but they would have to raise the tax rate on every working adult to do so. When you get out of school, you will have fifty years of paying taxes a much higher rate...so you are going to pay for that tuition either way. Then, all those extras that come along with public universities would be gone. They would strip the services and amenities back to resemble colleges that are more like local community colleges. Students that wanted those types of college environments and experiences would then have to opt for private universities.

Whispering 18,865
And of course private universities would raise their prices, I assume. You just can't win in this country.Maybe, or there might would be more demand for private universities so the cost would stay consistent for a while. Competition drives prices down, or at least keeps them manageable. Americans are spoiled, they aren't going to want that stripped back college experience. Otherwise, community colleges would have all the students of states that offer it for free, and that's not the case. Then, there is that whole issue of everyone's taxes going up 10 to 20 per cent. That wouldn't go over either.

MJHolland 12,725
Biden was an idiot though . Any of the candidates are horrible at this point. I'm rooting for Hillary slightly though. he's single handedly the greatest compromiser and negotiator of any living politician. He does goofy things but that does not discredit his astonishing career in Congress which you seem to be ignorant to.
venusian 4,686
It won't be free...college has to be funded somehow and that means higher taxes for people who are already over taxed. he's going to tax the rich and wealthy people. learn you facts hun WELCOME TO THE TRAGIC KINGDOM

They are always thinking about the next election. They need funds for that. They are not going to risk alienating their wealthy donors and risk their next term by voting yes on a bill like that. It will never happen.

I don't think it would be that expensive... perhaps 2 to 5% tax raise.I really wish we could be like some European countries when it comes to certain things. We'd have to change people's minds though. Americans are too stubborn. Sadly many European countries are becoming increasingly economically right-winged because we need to be able to compete with the US and China for labour, which means longer working hours, flexible labour times, lower taxes and less regulations. I have hope for Bernie, but even if he does get president he won't be able to change anything. Clinton doesn't want to change anything. It can only become more right-winged in the US. If we were going to match up with a country like Germany's tax rate, it would be a big percentage hike...especially if you are looking at free college and health insurance, like Bernie is talking about. Whispering 18,865
he's going to tax the rich and wealthy people. learn you facts hunNo, he wouldn't be able to pass that past Congress. In fact, he wouldn't be able to do that even if we had a democratic majority. Something that would take that much money every year has to come from everyone, just like it does in other countries. That just means that the middle class and working class will end up paying way more for their college education for themselves and their children than they would have paid in the first place.Something needs to be done about the out of control rise in college tuition, but Bernie's plan is not the answer to the problem we have in this country.
