StrawberryBlond 14,343
Wow, I thought I was harsh with views towards singers. If even I deem this kind of thing as too much, it must be bad. There's room for all kinds of artists. It would ironically get rather boring if everyone was trying to be avant garde and we'd be begging for some light entertainment that wasn't so pretentious and tryhard. Music should be diverse and provide something for everyone, for every mood. I don't think Katy's ever tried to pretend that she's something she's not. I believe she's defined herself as an entertainer before and that's fine. I have no problem with light entertainment so long as there's alternatives for different tastes. Katy does have her more serious moments and by the way that she speaks in interviews, it sounds like she's going to become more acoustic and "grown up" as time goes on. She's just been having fun being a fun popstar and will move on when she feels the time is right and I'm sure we'll get a whole new side to Katy Perry. I hope now she's in her 30's, it's going to be the start of offering us something a bit different, even if it's just a more adult version of her fun music. There have been changes in her and she occasionally throws something completely different our way like Wide Awake or Dark Horse. She's been more diverse than some popstars. Beyonce has never really changed, Rihanna is only just starting to change a bit now, and Taylor just got a bit poppier. With the exception of Madonna, Xtina and Gaga, most popstars don't change. Most have an image and stick to it (don't all artists from all genres?), it's nothing new. I don't see why, out of all the samey popstars they could've picked, Katy had to be the one to be criticised for not changing.

nativenewyorker 1,190
flamebait I didn't mean to disrespect her as a person, just the approach she takes to her persona and the way her team has branded her. Katy Perry (Hudson) the person isn't boring or generic, I like her personality and have no problem with her. But Katy Perry the brand is very pointless in pop culture. The songs and videos don't bring anything new in the world of music and entertainment. I didn't mean to insult her, just express my dissatisfaction with the sensationalization of her music and "art." Her art is kinda magical and disney like, Cause I remember watching her tour and I cringed really hard; however, I thought it was really cute seeing all the little girls cheer for her and seeing the mascots n stuff. RAMROD 106,210
If this article was about Gaga you'd be calling pressed Madge stan That is obvious. I bet Katy's fans doing the same for this article on their forums. It is just the nature of fanbase. Get over it. I never get why anyone always come up with this kind of response though. Guy 15
lol at the idea that any of these popstars outside of Katy Perry ARE actually some sort of culture-shifting, boundary-pushing entities that are transforming what we think about women. JusKeepBreathin 19,311
Katy Perry is Mariah Carey without the amazing voice or the bubbly script written in a glitter pen. Katy Perry is Britney Spears without the dance moves and the natural bubbly appeal and the nervous breakdown. Katy Perry is Kate Bush without the everything. This is ****ing epicI'm sorry, I am not a Mimi fan, but Mariah has Hero, Without You, Vision of Love, Can't Let Go and My All. There is nothing in Katy's entire discography that even comes close to those songs. Not to mention she single handedly made Christmas Albums a thing. The only contemporary Christmas song to ever be a classic. Kelly Clarkson came close, but it will never be All I Want For Christmas. I also remember watching her Daydream tour on DVD and with nothing but a black jump suit and a choir it was one hundred million times better than any show Katy has produced. Yes, Mariah Carey is music for the masses, but at least it WAS backed with talent. Kayla 7,595
This kind of debate always ****s me up because on one hand I respect Katy's often underestimated talent enough to say she deserves all the praise she gets, but on the other hand I also think she deserves all the criticism she gets. I look at the people listing all the things that make Katy a joke and I agree, then I look at the people listing all the things that make her valuable and I also agree. Katy, the dichotic chanteuse.
