FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A shooting outside an Arizona university dormitory early Friday left one student dead, three others wounded and the suspected shooter in custody, officials said.

University Police Chief Greg Fowler identified the suspect as 18-year-old Steven Jones. He is believed to be a freshman at Northern Arizona University.

Fowler told reporters that the incident started as a fight between two student groups.

The gunfire erupted in a parking lot at the school, public relations director Cindy Brown said.

The lot is just outside Mountainview Hall dormitory at the northeast side of the campus, she added.

Student Maria Gonzalez told The Associated Press that she at first suspected firecrackers.

"I was studying for an exam so I looked out the window and see two people running, and that's when I realized they weren't fireworks they were actually gunshots," she said.

"How am I supposed to feel safe where I'm learning," Gonzalez said.

I am not surprised anymore, and I don't like that. These tragedies should send several signals and cause devastating feelings, but sadly, nothing will happen. The States need stricter gun control, but that's probably not going to happen anytime soon.

Rest in peace. <3

It feels like there isn't anything else to say.

Please U.S just recognise that your current system of gun control isn't working. At the very least get an independent committee together to discuss and research the issue of gun control and shootings and see what they have to say on the matter.

I mean surely everyone can accept that. If the answer comes back that stricter gun control is needed then you can move forward with that, if the answer is somehow more guns then move forward with that.

Just make sure the committee isn't filled with just NRA people and can work in an environment free from bias or political influence.

I live in Arizona and it was honestly terrifying getting calls and text messages from my friends who attend school there. Luckily people I know are safe and sound, but it really sucks to know others unfortunately didn't make it out safe too. :ohno:

May the victim who died Rest In Peace and I hope the rest get well soon.
