She created the character in 2010 with Nick Knight as some kind of cultural experiment. They presented Jo as a new model from Italy and sold the pictures to Vogue Hommes Japan, without saying to the magazine that this was in fact Gaga in drag. Of course, people became suspicious very quickly, but it wasn't until a year later with the Yoü and I single era that we basically got confirmation of who Jo really was.
