"91-jährige mutmaßliche SS-Helferin angeklagt

70 Jahre nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs muss sich eine mutmaßliche SS-Helferin aus Schleswig-Holstein im Vernichtungslager Auschwitz vor dem Landgericht Kiel verantworten. Die Staatsanwaltschaft beim Schleswig-Holsteinischen Oberlandesgericht hat Anklage erhoben - wegen Beihilfe zum Mord in mehr als 260.000 Fällen. Die 91 Jahre alte deutsche Staatsangehörige soll in ihrer Funktion als Funkerin der Kommandantur des Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslagers Auschwitz von April bis Juli 1944 bei der systematischen Ermordung verschleppter Juden geholfen haben. Nach Angaben der Generalstaatsanwaltschaft in Schleswig gibt es einen hinreichenden Tatverdacht gegen die Frau.

Strafbarkeit von Gehilfen rechtlich neu bewertet

Das Verfahren gegen die 91-Jährige war zunächst als sogenannte Vorprüfungssache von der Zentralen Stelle der Landes-Justizverwaltungen in Ludwigsburg geführt worden. Nach den Urteilen des Bundesgerichtshofs gegen die Helfer des Attentats auf das World-Trade-Center in New York sowie des Landgerichts München im Prozess gegen den NS-Kriegsverbrecher John Demjanjuk wurde die sogenannte Gehilfenstrafbarkeit rechtlich neu bewertet. Deshalb wurde das Verfahren gegen die ehemalige Funkerin nach Schleswig-Holstein abgegeben. Wann die Hauptverhandlung eröffnet wird, ist noch nicht bekannt."

she was probably 20 something when she was a nazi. its been over 60 years and i wouldnt view someone at 90 as the same person as when they were 20 something. people change a lot over time especially that much time and i wonder if today shes remorseful at all about what she contributed to.

 

it feels too late for justice for me but i assume germany wants to do whatever it can to clean up the bad image of their nazi past. she'll live out what llittle time she has left in jail probably

The war ended 70 years ago, the woman is over 91 now and you ask me why it is ridiculous?

How do you think how many of all those guards are still alive now? There was much time to judge them for these 70 years, but nobody bothered. So why now when they are almost at the death's door? Also, how severe is that punishment going to be? 1 or 2 years (depending on how long she's going to live) of prison which is like a luxurious hotel comparing to the conditions Germans prepared for people in Poland back then. So is it really a just "punishment" for such crimes? I find it extremely disrespectful towards all of the victims of the war. All those trials are a joke to me.

Culpability in the context of WW II is a very interesting and provocative subject. The influential study published as "Backing Hitler: Consent and Coercion in Nazi Germany" showed once and for all that the idea that Germans didn't know what was happening in concentration camps was a lie. The mass of ordinary Germans, including the ones who didn't work in them, knew that systematic extermination was taking place.

This study was important because all previous study concluded that either the Germans didn't know anything because they didn't (dare to) ask questions, or they were being seduced as a passive, ignorant public by the Nazi regime. Both those ideas were successfully unrooted.

As a result, an extremely large amount of ordinary Germans can be held accountable for collaborating in the mass murder of Jews and other "degenerates". This can of course be softened by referring to ideas like the boiling frog theory and the concept of herding, in any case the question: "Who can be held responsible for the Holocaust?" can be answered in a hundred ways.

In short: complex issue, this woman being punished surely has symbolic meaning but I suppose it's best to remember that it's solely symbolic and doesn't wash away the fact that punishing a few doesn't excuse the faults of millions of others.

I'm on the fence about this type of thing. The lady is 91 years old, why wait until now, 71 years later, to try to put her in jail for helping to kill 260,000 people. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have justice for all of those innocent lives lost, but I don't think putting a 91 year old in jail this late is one. I could understand if she was 50-60 years old, but 91 years old. Come on, if she saw the error of what she did, then just let her live the rest of her regular life with constant surveillance/checking on her since they found her as a ex-nazi, but if she didn't then that's a whole another story.

It's more symbolic. She lead people in to the gas chambers and even put gas in it. She is a murderer. It's never to late

My family was the victim of people like her. (Maybe she is even the murderer of my family). I think it's more symbolic. I want her to say that she killed so many people. I don't care about the punishment ,but I want to see her face and I want her to say that she killed so many people.

Murder never gets old. And this was genocide. I don't care how old she is. It's even surprising she lived this long and didn't kill herself because of guilty conscience. Or maybe she never had any?
