Migrants located in Croatia in a hotel protesting

Me and my partner are on the housing list in the United Kingdom and have been on for nearly a year already :/

I am all for letting these poor souls in, but economic wise, what can we do and how can we adapt to it?

Economic wise, UK needs to stop spending billions on the Queen and weapons which are creating more refugees.

"UK government plans to spend £100bn on the Trident nuclear system while saying there's no alternative to cuts in welfare services

"We're heading into another five years of Tory cuts. No doubt we’ll hear the same tired old lie — there isn’t enough money to go round. But when it comes to nuclear weapons and war they can always find the cash because the reality is there’s plenty of money — it’s a question of who is making the decisions about what it is spent on.

No doubt the Tories will continue to want to spend £100 billion on the militarily useless nuclear weapons system Trident. But the majority of the population doesn’t want it, and no doubt all of us in the anti-austerity movement would rather the money was spent on something else. And given the condition of our social and public services it’s hardly surprising.

As the government continues its redistribution of wealth from the poor and working people to the super-rich, we are all worse off and the very fabric of our decent society is being destroyed.

There are many areas where this money needs urgently to be spent to sustain the wellbeing of the population. Hundreds of thousands of people now rely on foodbanks, a damning indictment of the government’s priorities. In a letter to the British Medical Journal in 2013, a group of health experts warned that food poverty should be seen as a “public health emergency.” Instead of weapons of mass destruction, we need sustainable, properly paid jobs. No-one should go hungry in one of the richest countries in the world.

The increasing number of people in poverty follows drastic cuts in the government’s welfare payments. The changes in repayable crisis loans, increased conditionality on benefit payments and reassessments are just some of the measures which have affected low-income families. The bedroom tax and the introduction of universal credit will affect many more.

There are 3.5 million children growing up in poverty today, including in households where adults are working. Too many people are trapped in part-time work or earning the minimum wage, which is not high enough. The cost of living is rising far higher than wages and welfare payments. And cancelling Trident replacement would save the government 20 times more money than can be saved by the tax credit reforms.

Croatia is more than okay to refugees. The problem is they refuse to listen to them and use the force mostly. I've been watching the news and they're being separated and then can't be brought back together because they don't wanna be registered, like wtf you guys :smh:

Croatia is being amazing to them so far and you can't complain one bit.

I read that if they get registered in any of these countries they cannot get asylum in Germany or any other country they're going to so it's not that simple.

Those countries can send them back and then Croatia is stuck with them.

Thank you, sometimes I just can't find right words to express what I want to say :)

They are 99% Muslim and their religion forbids them eating pork, what you probably know, and it is totally ok, we must be tolerrant and respect different culture. But they are refusing the food Red Cross gives them because they want proof it's not pork. They also don't want to stay here, Croatia is just a "corridor" from east to west, but before they carry on, our government kindly wanted to provide them some kind of minnimal health insurance (including vaccination, medicines, disinsection etc.) However, it makes them feel "dirty" so they strike by refusing to take any kind of food or they just take it and then throw it away. Which is very, very disgusting, since Croatia is a country with big problems and still hasn't recovered from war, yet kindly offers help.

I don't want to go into politics and history, but Germany is a far more advanced and bigger country than Croatia. Whole Berlin has more inhabitants and doctors than we have in whole country and healthcare system is organized better. Allowing them to choose between a male or a female volunteer because of their religious beliefs shows how open for cooperation we are here. Still, they don't seem to respect it.

Thank you for letting me know! Well, everyone knows in Germany that Muslims don't eat pork and as far as I am informed, the refugees have always being told what kind of food they can have for a meal, f. e. in the "admission camps" by the German Red Cross. You know, a proper, open and friendly communication can be very helpful and may be a reason, why we seem to have lesser problems with the refugees...

Tbh this is all "he said" -"she said" talk, without any evidence, on Croatian government FB page they and their red cross are fully aware about the food and items they need, like diapers and such. But people keep commenting "our own citizens are poor!!" Croatia is richer than Serbia, for example.
