Swine is a diss track first and foremost. One would have not known it is about rape if Gaga herself didn't say so. Diss tracks were a thing already from the stone age. Regardless, a song (from any genre) about rape is not experimental. Madonna sang about wanting to kill her ex husband because he stole her money, that topic was not explored before, does that make MDNA experimental?

Keep making excuses. Swine is a diss track about RAPE.

Madonna (and I'm sure many other artists) did that 30 years ago though. So you're claiming that it's experimental because it sonically followed the edm trend? interesting.

Entertaining to see how your argument changes every page :dies: Enigma the true queen of reinvention.

I feel like people justify ARTPOP because it is "experimental" :awkney:

I love ARTPOP but even I can just enjoy it for what it is. Interesting, metaphorical, and fun

Is not because its EDM, rather because is an EDM rape song. Name any other song that is EDM and about rape, and then we'll talk.

well Portishead and Bjork (especially Medulla), even some Bowie b-side albums (Low b-sides) are experimental, not FKA Twigs lmao

Medúlla is a great example of experimental pop! It's virtually a capella (by incorporating things like beatboxing, choirs, and throat singing) but many of the songs are still accessible (like "Oceania" and "Triumph of a Heart"). I've never heard anything like it before or after.

I'm so done with some of you :saladga: If you're on this GAGA site stop insulting her work and just log off. When you reach her level and actually see how difficult it was to release diverse music, you can criticize all you want, but while you're just someone freely judging whatever the **** you want behind your computer screen for hours, just judge people at your level :kissga:

ARTPOP is pretty safe vocally and sonically. The songs' lyrics are creative and different but not experimental in any way. Biophilia is experimental, ARTPOP is pure comercial pop.

...But artists like Madonna sang about rape 30 years ago :dies: It just happens that today's music soundscape is mainly electronic and Gaga hopped on that trend. These mainstream scene lyrical boundaries were pushed by artists like Madonna decades ago. I still don't understand how in your mind a diss song (that Gaga had to announce it to be about rape in order for the music listener to comprehend so) is daring or experimental.

Which Madonna song is about rape?

Which Madonna song is about rape?

Till Death Do Us Part is about her first husband who raped her, tied her to a chair and hit her with a baseball bat.

After a bit of reflection, I've realized that I've never heard people use "experimental" to describe lyrics to a song. I've only heard it used in relation to the music itself and how it's performed. I've heard of experimental literature (such as Gertrude Stein), but literature and lyrics to a song have different goals and are considered different kinds of art*. Also, lyrics to a pop song don't have any effect on the genre of pop the song is. The only genres I can think of where lyrics do play a part in the genre are rap (political/conscious rap) and punk (queercore, riot grrrl). This is probably because rap and punk music emphasize the message of the song while pop music doesn't. Thus, I don't believe that Gaga's lyrics are experimental or have any kind of bearing on the genre of the song it's a part of.

Björk and Tori Amos have some weird-ass lyrics, but I've never heard anyone call them experimental because of their lyrics. I don't see why Gaga's lyrics should have that label applied to them either.

*Lyrics are seen as an extension of music. I can understand how it can be interpreted as literature because it is written work, but then we'd have to a--lyze Gaga as an author, not as a musician.
