What is the beginning (that scar on her back, the hospital, all that)?

Why is all those people staring at her from the second floor?

why is she stuck on a car?

Forgive me if I look dumb, I just suck at understanding metaphores:confused:

Well, we can just assume that something awful happened to her and led her to being hospitalized. Some argue she was raped, or she got an abortion, we don't really know for sure but it doesn't really matter. What matters is that she had hit rock bottom.

I think that all the people that stare at her from the second floor are the people that didn't believe in her, the people that were making her feel worthless, like the ballerina - Gaga has said before that the ballerinas represented a perfection that she desperately wanted to reach, and felt unable to equal.

As for the whole parking lot segment, I guess it just represents the rage she felt to kick back and to explode everything on her way. The part where she is stuck on top of the car is mysterious to me :laughga: It feels like she's trying to rob the car, like, she's trying to get inside of it from the roof, idk.

It's ok hun, it's not an easy video.

I think the clinic scene in the beginning is about her getting an abortion. She made sure to specify in a lot of interviews that she was at a "women's clinic". This is the location where abortions are typically performed. When she was being wheeled in the gurney at the beginning, it is clear she had just been through the procedure and is being brought to a recovery room.  Her whole monologue was basically telling us that she went through something very traumatic but she is going to retell that story in a more glamorized and positive way. She is going to relive those terrible events the way that she wants to because doing so makes those memories more manageable for her.  The framework of the video is true but she added elements such as the hot nurses, Calvin Klein outfits, fancy hospital, classical music, etc.

The nurse/doctor mentions that she delivered her when she was a baby. This means that she is an obstetrician (or a nurse for obstetricians). An obstetrician would also be the type of doctor who would perform an abortion.  She also says, “no intimacy for two weeks”. This is standard protocol for post abortion recovery. Gaga says that her Mother is a saint, and implies that she is not. She is probably feeling guilty about getting the abortion and maybe for how she got pregnant in the first place. She then says that she is going to make it because she has nothing left to lose. She was willing to sacrifice everything she had for her career and dream.

The bruises on her back may be from being raped (though I do not believe she was violently raped). Maybe they aren’t real but symbolize her being abused by someone mentally or s-xually. Maybe they foreshadow her being “stabbed in the back” or betrayed by her record label when they drop her.

I also have a theory on how she got pregnant. I think that she was coerced into having s-x with her producer. She probably felt like she had to use her body in order to get ahead in the business. This can be considered a form of rape. I can go into more detail about this if you want.

Anyway, the classical music comes on and the camera pans out to show crazed women running around the clinic. I think these women represent her stressed out and crazed state she was in at the time. Her life was turning into a mess. In light of glamorizing and reformatting this mess into something more pleasant as she looks back on her life, she projects this mess onto other people instead (the crazed girls). Then she plays classical music in the background as she raises up her arms as if to meditate or something.

The next scene is her at her apartment recovering. She is wearing a diaper like garment and pads over her breasts. After an abortion, women bleed from their vaginas and may leak milk from their breasts. She gets a call from her manager and is informed that she is dropped from her label. After going through so many sacrifices, she loses it. She trashes her apartment and cries that she is an artist, a star and that she is supposed to be “so terrific”. She feels disappointed and defeated.

Eventually though, she gets through this tough situation and “did what any girl would do. [she] did it all over again”. Its interesting that when she says that quote, she makes the blow job gesture. I think this further confirms my coerced s-x theory. Her dancers looking down at her represents the intimidation and fear that she felt about moving forward with her career. She hit an ultimate low and has to work her way up to the top. One of her dancers flexes her leg all the way up (a ballet move). The ballerinas in this video represent perfection. This shows that she feels inferior to them, like they are more skilled and perfect than she is.

In the next scene, Gaga is struggling to get inside her car. This represents how she is having a difficult time moving on from her past and taking back control of her life. She finally gets in (or falls in rather) and Marry the Night starts. This is the turning point in the video. She puts on her makeup, puts down her pills, has a smoke, and is ready to take on the world.

She goes to dance class nd initially is very insecure and uncomfortable around the other dancers. She feels out of place. Eventually though, she improves and her confidence grows. She moves up to the front of the class and even helps the ballerina up after she falls while trying to show off an advanced move.

At the end of the video, some of her struggles are highlighted. She is shown attempting to carry a piano up a flight of stairs and falling, eating a bite of pizza, throwing it out, then vomiting it up and, smoking. The piano struggle is mended by her allowing someone to help her carry it. This shows how she got over trying to do everything herself. She realized that it is perfectly ok to ask for help when you need it. The pizza bit shows how she was bulimic but got over it. These scenes are cut with her pouring gasoline on the cars and setting them on fire. This represents her burning her traumatic past and moving on from it.

I really love this video. Its my favorite music video of hers. It is so revealing and showed a side of Gaga that we had never seen before at the time it was released. I feel like we got a glimpse into her creative mind. We got to see how she thinks.

Thank you so much! I always believed she was in the hospital because everyone thought she was crazy and she was in a mad house, but the abortion theory seems to make much more sense

I know this is over a year old but I've always believed that gaga was telling us she had an abortion. I had one at 14 and so many of my experiences mirror the ones in the video. People never talk about the tremendous amount of guilt women have after the procedure. The guilt almost drove me to suicide

I love you monsters. I'd be unfixably broken without you
