Would Aura have been more successful than Applause as a lead single?

No, Applause, Do What U Want or Gypsy are the only songs on ARTPOP that sound like they'd be a successful lead single.

But that's how much they were thirsty for it :trollga:

so thats why all those stations continued playing it after the initial 3 days hype :neyde:

No tbh to me i feel the only lead options that could have been as good as applause or bigger are DWUW and G.U.Y and guys we both know why those two underperformed DWUW due to all it's messes and no one gave G.U.Y a shot it was too late , the era already fell apart by then no one was here for it. But my oh my G.U.Y could have been a powerful lead an ode to her Fame Monster pop style , the GP would have been here for it due to it's commercial sound whereas DWUW could have been deemed as omg Lady Gaga has changed her style and came out with a new re-invented Urban/Rnb sound.

SexxxDreams could work too if she had the momentum of BTW but she didnt she had a broken hip and declining tour sales behind her. Venus and Aura would surely make some GP members cringe.

Then again, it was a leaked song, so I guess it was legally borderline ;)

If the intro was edited to something shorter and less annoying (for GP), I think so. The song is in many ways a v.2 of Bad Romance but the two biggest similarities are that the usual tunes are awkward and "grungy", the chorus is pure slayage. I can also imagine the video being extravagant, more Gaga and definitely more professional looking than Applause's vid was/is.

So yes, by going the tame way with Applause they made it less Gaga, no wonder it didn't perform too well.

it wasn't laaaahv

I think it would have made more of an impact. It sells the album better as a weird cluster of fun. It definitly would have been a fun single with crazy performances. I think Applause is the best song on ARTPOP so if it was a final single the album would end on a happy note. Also applause is a grower (at first i hated it) so having the album cycle and then released as an end single means people wouldn't start off not liking it and it'd be an instant hit. Personally i think the singles should have gone, Aura, Donatella (to go with the Versace campaign), Do what you want, ARTPOP (to co-inside with the album release), Venus (released to go with the space travel which sadly didn't happen :( ) and finally Applause. Imagen if the era went as Gaga planned it would have been brill.

I think it would have performed similiarly to Applause, however, I think that the first week sales of ARTPOP would have increased to 300K +, and the album and era would be much more critically-acclaimed, as releasing Aura would be considered a major risk at the time.

^^^ Those are the only ones I thought had a shot on radio. Especially with the GP's lack of interest in Gaga at that time.

Aura would have been a spectacular lead single, the era flopped anyway.

I know LOTS of people who were put off ARTPOP because Applause was 'generic'.

I would have bet a lot of money that it would have done really well. It's a massive song that is totally "Gaga". Potential to be one of her most memorable singles.
