*It’s a booming time to be a truck driver. According to data NPR compiled from the US Census Bureau, truck driving is currently the most popular job in 29 states.

It’s not that truck driving is a particularly sought after career path, however. Rather, it is simply one that is available and pays decently. Unlike a plethora of other jobs that have declined in recent years, truck driving has remained immune to the forces that have elbowed out different lines of work. In the past decades, computers, cash machines and self-serve pumps have largely replaced secretaries, bank tellers and gas station attendants, respectively. Door-to-door deliveries, on the other hand, cannot be outsourced to another country, while long haul driving has yet to be automated.

Yet truck drivers might be next in line on the endangered jobs list. Google, Uber and Tesla are all working on self-driving vehicles, beginning with those that make long-haul journeys. If entrepreneurs succeed at automating cross-country deliveries, this would not only be a boon for companies that ship goods – self-driving trucks don’t have to stop for long mandatory breaks after spending hours on the road – but also for road safety. In the US alone up to 4,000 lives each yearare lost in crashes with large trucks (driver error is almost always to blame).

i don't see that many jobs being automated in 10 years but we're definitely heading towards a vastly more automated society in the future!

(before y'all freak out, this can only be a good thing, it'll be rough to begin with but when everything is more automated it'll cost much less to produce and i doubt we'll be paying machines anytime soon so it's likely we'll have to introduce a basic income when unemployment rates start soaring, some countries are actually already starting to test the waters with this)

i don't see that many jobs being automated in 10 years but we're definitely heading towards a vastly more automated society in the future!

Very idealistic, but I hope so. I've become so negative and cynical about the US these last few years- I've become so jaded, wow.

And I really do hope truck driving doesn't get too sloshed- it's been a lowkey backup for me for quite a while. Well, and trading, but still.

And THIS is why the United States needs to invest in higher education for EVERYONE. Those truck drivers could be working other jobs given the training. We are moving into a new phase of civilization, but our Government is still stuck in the ****ing 1980's.

Anything that'll get them off the road is fine by me. They're f*cking scary. I've nearly been in so many accidents because lorry drivers have misjudged the side winds, speed, the space they need, etc. With any luck they'll be environmentally friendly and it'll kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

how is it sad? how many people can genuinely say that they love their jobs? what's sad is the fact that we waste so many years working miserably just to get food on the table and a few cute years of retirement when you're too old to actually enjoy it. thank god i'll never have to work like that. jobs are like slavery tbh

It already happened for years in many places though?

Singapore, Hong Kong, Barcelona Spain, London UK, Vancouver Canada, USA, Japan and more are already having automated trains system.

Higher education doesn't always mean going to a 4 year college and getting a degree in philosophy. It is increasingly becoming going to technical schools to learn a trade or skill. These types of schools still leave students thousands of dollars in debt. Going to a trade school gets you a job as a pharmacy tech, but it should not also leave you in crippling debt. Debt takes the place of money that could otherwise be infused into the economy as consumption. The government needs to fix this. We're getting screwed over by a system that sees education as a burden rather than an investment.

Pessimists have been saying this for the past 150 years  

 

if this theory that automation killed jobs was right... Unemployment should be over 90% now considering our productivity per worker thanks to technology has surged since industrial revolution thanks to technology. Additionally most women now work taking up additional jobs

 

however when u produce more you can consume more. Mass production from technology makes each unit cheaper and so each person consumes more. As such, all the extra consumption creates jobs elsewhere...

 

yeah, nowadays we couldnt possibly have an economy growing food and basic necessities anymore. Why? Cuz with only like 2% of people working as farmers we now produce all the food we need. Did everyone else go unemployed? NO!

 

Labor and resources were freed to produce and enjoy an economy based on luxuries with services such as hair cuts, restaurants, telecom, internet, going to the movies, bowling etc... And u spend money on big TVs and electronics cause lets face it, shelter and food no longer takes up all our income so we spend on other stuff that creates jobs

 

You ppl need to understand some have theorized this over and over and over again and it never happens. They dont understand the economy and are looking at it from a narrow perspective. This will allow resorces to be devoted elsewhere and we will have other jobs that will be created

finally someone who gets it. I keep trying to explain that technology doesnt destroy jobs, it merely changes them... See my post above ^^^^^^^^^

 

if that theory was correct, unemployment should be over 90% now considering so many jons have become obsolete or require far fewer people than in industrial revolution...

 

instead with mass production everything is cheaper per unit making us being able to devote more resources to other things that developed other industries

 

we devote so many resources to the service and goods economy now... Haircuts, entertainment, vacations, electronics we dont really need to survive but make life better etc...

 

this was all possible to develop a society like this because only a small portion of labor and resources now need to go into sustaining basics of life... Technology gave us the surplus in labor and resources/income to develop an economy in other areas  

 

they have been saying technology will leave everyone jobless since 150 years ago and it never happens... On top of that women entered workforce last century nearly doubling workforce yet we still have jobs
