It looks promising. My main issue with the film is that (based from the trailer) it looks like it's another one of those films that gives its own whitewashed version of queer history- the character leading the Stonewall riots is a white cis country boy (who was literally invented for this film) when the true unsung heroes of the Stonewall movement were transgender women of color such as Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, Miss Major, etc. Sometimes* I take issue with cis males taking the roles of transwomen in film- I mean surely there are plenty of aspiring transwomen actors who could have been casted in the film (as lead characters not background ones) and had their breakthrough, while simultaneously playing themselves in a film that depicts a historic and important moment in history? I mean I'll still watch the film, but I think it's time Hollywood gives trans women of color the recognition they deserve for their revolutionary acts that lead to significant and lasting social change.

Now that my rant is over, what do y'all think? Obviously I'm basing my rant on what I saw on the trailer, the film could end up being a bit different than what is portrayed. Anyways will you be watching this film? Discuss.

Also I put it in the main E. section for visibility, but once enough people have seen it I'll ask for this to be moved to its appropriate sub section.

Like I stated in the OP, people are upset that the credit for the Stonewall riots -based on the trailer- is being given to white cis men, when the real heroes of the movement were transwomen of color.

the original stonewall riots were started by a black trans woman and this film is about white gay & cis men mainly. None of the main characters are actual real people either apparently.

to the OP: I think they should've had Martha P Johnson portrayed by Laverne Cox tbh

this looks really good, I've been to the stonewall once last year during pride and knew there was history to it but totally watching this.

untitled

A black trans woman threw the first brick in the 1969 Stonewall riots, NOT a white man

*sigh* It looks so cheesy, and part of me wants to see it for the sake of knowing whether its even a good movie or not, but the problems with its accuracy are already a huge red flag for me :saladga:

how come we can portray D-Day perfectly in Saving Private Ryan where it was a WAR zone but we can't portray a gay movement properly when there are tons of transwomen and gay men willing to act in movies who are homeless/could need the job but it gets washed out like everything else not white cis male.

I'm really interested to hear her thoughts on this film considering she herself is a transwoman of color.

Yeah, as everybody else has said already, I'm not a fan of its supposed erasing of the major contributions of trans POC in the movement.

Also, no forgiveness for Emmerich's 1998 Godzilla adaptation, even if I did like Zilla.

3 points in and ready for more

It's sad that a movie about an LGBT RIOT has to be retooled to make it acceptable to mainstream movie-goers. Of course white cis gay men were players in Stonewall (and IIRC the majority of people there were gay men), but so were people who were of color, trans, bi, women, etc. It's an absolute disservice to people like Stormé DeLarverie, Marsha P. Johnson, and Sylvia Rivera.

It annoys me when the more conventional LGBT people (in the eyes of cishets) throw the less conventional LGBT people under the bus. This would've been a great opportunity to educate the masses about LGBT history and show that the LGBT community is diverse. :saladga:

But lemme just give props to the TV shows and movies that are not afraid to show LGBT people who aren't white cis gay men. :applause:

I'm not a woman. I'm not a man. I am something that you'll never understand.
