Sorry I don't buy this. Nobody should be able to hurt others with their hatred. You can have an opinion, but not in this manner cause with every freedom there's also responsibilities. In Europe we have a ban on hate speech and it doesn't make us any less free. I don't see how bing able to say "God hates f*gs" or being free to be a member of KKK in 2014 contributes to democracy. It does not, it only opens the door for extremism and that's what started WWII for example.

In the US you managed to outlaw these even if the "congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech...". The European Court of Human Rights doesn't have a definition for hate speech too, but countries still manage to regulate what should be protected as free speech and what shouldn't. If you want to research how different countries define hate speech just google it, but basically hatred based on someones race, religion and s-xual orientation is considered hate speech.

To be more correct the ECHR doesn't enforce these laws, I was just giving an example lol. Every country has it's own constitution, but we do have a Committee of ministers of the Council of Europe(from all member states). They monitor the member states and send recommendations of laws that are voted by the Council and the EU Parliament and each country should take it's own national approach to fulfill them. The European Commission then makes sure it's being done. :haha:

 

My point is that the extreme hate speech can be outlawed without hurting the freedom of speech. All it takes is a few very small, but essential rules.

Well I totally disagree and I don't consider that freedom of speech, in the words of Noam Chomsky "it is precisely in the case of horrendous ideas that the right of free expression must be most vigorously defended".
