Israel Combats Jewish Extremism

Israel takes its first steps for a zero tolerance policy against Jewish extremists. The last few months several incidents seem to point to a rise of Jewish extremism in Israel. In June there was the attack on a Catholic church at the Sea of Galilee, last week a Jewish extremist stabbed six participants of a pride parade in Jerusalem and a Palestinian toddler died in the West Bank. The house of his parents was lit on fire, in all probability by extremist settlers.

Apparently the Israeli government realizes it simply can't go on like this. Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the arson on the West Bank as terrorism. President Reuven Rivlin visited the surviving victims in the hospital and openly asked if the perpetrators had lost their humanity.

And it didn't just stay with words. Defence minister Moshe Yaalon has signed a first order for the administrative detainment against a Jewish extremist, the 23 year old Meir Ettinger, grandson of radical rabbi Meir Kahane, whose Kach party is described as a terrorist organization by the United States. Kahane himself called for the systematic removal of all Arabs from Israel, but his followers seem to radicalize with a decreasing fear of violence.

Ettinger is now detained because of his involvement in an "extremist Jewish organization" that seeks to attack Christian and Palestinian targets. He is detained for six months without any form of trial, a procedure that, in the past, was criticized by human rights organizations when it involved Palestinian activists.

I don't think 6 months without trial is good, but I agree with combatting any kind of religious violence and he should be punished if law allows.

I've heard (not sure if accurate) that he had been offered therapy and psychological treatments.. weird. A figure like him should be sentenced to death.

Extremist settlers attack another home in Duma

 

NABLUS (Ma’an) -- Extremist Israeli settlers attacked a Palestinian home with fire bombs and rocks in the village of Duma south of Nablus in the northern West Bank on Saturday morning, Palestinian officials told Ma'an.

Ghassan Daghlas, who monitors settler activities in the northern West Bank, told Ma’an that “a number of extremist settlers hurled two fire bombs at the home of Mahmoud Fazza al-Kaabna.” 

The fire bombs, Daghlas said, landed on the outer wall of the home near a window, but did not make it inside the house.

The attackers also hurled stones at the house, with one of them hitting al-Kaabna in the abdomen.

The settler attack took place a week after the deadly arson attack which killed 18-month-old Ali Dawabsha and his father Saad from the same village. The mother Riham and 4-year-old brother Ahmad are still struggling for their lives after they sustained third-degree burns on most of their bodies.

Among its recommendations, how to set fire to a Palestinian house: “Stock up with a petrol bomb, preferably of a liter and a half; a lighter; gloves; a mask; a crowbar/hammer; a bag to carry it all. When you get to the village, search for a house with an open door or window without bars.”

 

The instructions were recently found stored on a mobile device in the car of a Jewish extremist. The text was publicized by Israel’s internal security agency, Shin Bet, on July 29 — two days before the deadly arson attack in the West Bank village of Duma that killed a Palestinian toddler, Ali Dawabsheh, and severely burned his parents and his 4-year-old brother.

 

The extremist, Moshe Orbach, who is accused of writing the manual, has been charged with incitement to violence and terrorism. Yet after a court hearing on Sunday, Mr. Orbach, 24, was released to house arrest pending a ruling on a request by state prosecutors to keep him detained until trial. He is home on bail, under parental supervision and barred from using the Internet.
