Immigrants in Germany swell to record high 11 million

"The number of immigrants living in Germany rose by 3.7 percent last year to a record high of 11 million and a fifth of the population is of a migrant background, the Federal Statistics Office said on Monday.

The figures highlight Germany's growing reliance on foreign-born workers to drive its powerhouse economy, Europe's largest, as well as its acceptance of hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Many of the immigrants came from other European Union countries, such as Poland, Romania, Italy, Bulgaria and Hungary.

Last year, the number of people living in Germany of a migrant background had risen by around 1.5 million, or 10 percent, from 2011. The native population -- excluding people of a migrant background -- fell by 1.4 percent.

The figures were based on a sample census, the Statistics Office said. It has been tracking migration numbers since 2005.

The release of the report comes as tensions are rising in Germany over surging numbers of refugees, expected to more than double to a record 450,000 this year from 200,000 in 2014.

An opinion poll last week found support falling for the government's pro-refugee policies.

There were 150 arson or other attacks that damaged or destroyed refugee shelters in the first six month of 2015 as Germany struggles to cope with refugees fleeing war and violence in the Middle East, Asia and Africa."

Great that it's becoming so multicultural and I hope the government sticks to their pro-refugee stance even if the people disagree with it

Merkel's party is the only conservative party in Europe I can stand. No need to be harsh on asylum seekers because there's no big culturally far-right opposition. In the city I live in, about 50% is immigrant. Most from Indonesia, West-Europe, Turkey, Morocco and Poland.

Amazing right :) I was just wondering why should Europe be multi-cultural, but Japan, Saudi arabia, in fact all of the arabian countries  should not? Another interesting question - Europe is too white, let'ts make it multi-cultural and filled it up with immigrants.. Great! Now what about Africa or Asia - why nobody is talking about too black or too asian?

So, this is the age where Germany becomes like Australia, Canada and USA, aka land of immigrants. Cool.

Maybe more EU countries follow suit?

I know for sure places like Croatia amd Italy doesn't like immigrants :fan:

Because no one wants to move to those parts of the world (except maybe Japan). Usually immigrants move to highly developed nations such as European nations, Australia, Canada, USA, etc. Those nations have a white majority. Multiculturalism is good in the way that it creates new opportunities for those from other countries in the developed nations they go to.

I haven't heard people say that these countries are "too white" though? In fact, I always hear people complaining that there's too many immigrants! (In the US at least). I have heard people say whites hold too much power and it would be nice to share it though....

Should they come. I slay them all :giggle:

Seriously I hate xenophobes. I'd rather see xenophobes deported than innocent refugees
