Two children were among dozens of people shot in Chicago this weekend.

A 7-year-old boy was wounded in a gang-related shooting on Chicago's Northwest Side just after 8:45 p.m. Sunday, police said.

He was sitting in a car with a 19-year-old man in the 2400-block of North Parkside Avenue in Chicago's Belmont Cragin neighborhood when police said someone opened fire from inside another vehicle.

The boy was shot in the shoulder. The man suffered a graze wound to the head. He drove them to Community First Medical Center, where their conditions stabilized.

Police said the shooting was gang-related. It remains under investigation.

In a separate shooting, a 6-year-old girl was injured on Chicago's South Side Sunday night.

Police said two people were fighting in the 5600-block of South Bishop Street in the city's Englewood neighborhood around 8:40 p.m. The girl was outside near them.

One of the people involved in the fight pulled out a gun and opened fire, striking the girl, police said. Police said the shooter drove off in a white SUV.

The girl was taken to Comer Children's Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. She is listed in serious condition.

In other shootings:

•  At 1:40 a.m. Monday, a 20-year-old man was shot, also in West Englewood neighborhood, Gaines said. He was in the 6300 block of South Bell Avenue when he was shot in the leg, said Gaines, who did not immediately have information on the circumstances of the shooting. No hospital information was available.

• At 9:30 p.m. Sunday, a 19-year-old man was shot in the Cabrini Green neighborhood on the Near North Side, Gaines said. He was out in the 800 block of North Hudson Avenue when a white vehicle pulled up and someone inside began firing shots, said Gaines. The man began running away when he realized he had been shot in the hip. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

• A 7-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man told police they were shot at about 8:45 p.m. Sunday in the Belmont Central neighborhood on the Northwest Side, Gaines said. They were inside a vehicle near the 2500 block of North Parkside Avenue when a gray vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots, Gaines said. The boy was shot in the shoulder and the man had a graze wound to the head. They took themselves to Community First Medical Center.

• A 5-year-old girl was shot in the leg about 8:40 p.m. Sunday in the 5600 block of South Bishop Street in the city's Englewood neighborhood on the South Side, Gaines said. Police initially said the girl was 7 years old. She was shot during a fight between two other people, one of whom pulled a gun and began shooting, then fled in a white SUV. The girl was hit in the leg and taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in serious condition.

• Earlier, two women and a man were shot about 7:55 p.m. Sunday in the 8300 block of South Brandon Avenue in The Bush neighborhood on the South Side, said Officer Thomas Sweeney, a Chicago police spokesman. A 34-year-old woman was shot in the back and taken to Northwestern Memorial; a 39-year-old woman was shot in the leg and buttocks and taken to Stroger; and a 26-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and taken to Christ, said Gaines.

• A 16-year-old boy was shot in the foot and a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg when someone inside a passing vehicle fired shots about 7:15 p.m. Sunday in the 200 block of West 108th Street in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side, said Sweeney. The two got themselves to Roseland Community Hospital, where they were in good condition, Sweeney said.

• A 17-year-old boy was shot about 4 p.m. Sunday in the 600 block of East Pershing Road in the Ida B. Wells / Darrow Homes neighborhood on the South Side. The boy suffered a wound to his leg and was taken to Northwestern Memorial, where he was listed in good condition, Sweeney said. Police said the victim was uncooperative and the shooting may have been gang-related.

deaths due to gang violence happens every damn day but barely anyone seems to give a ****. we save our outrage and twitter SJW hashtags for police brutality, racist terrorists, theater shootings, feminism and dead lions.

while those are all worthy causes and all, gang violence goes widely unnoticed so i'm here to make sure you notice

As murders soar, El Salvador gangs want to talk truce

 

San Salvador, El Salvador - 'Santiago', as he prefers to be called, joined El Salvador's 18th Street Gang when he was 17 years old.

"I had few options. My family was poor. They made me feel like I belonged," he said.

Santiago is now one of the gang's leaders.

He admits his 15-year career has included committing serious crimes, like murder. But in one of his most proud acts, he  played a role in the negotiations which led to atruce in 2012  between his gang and its fiercest rival MS-13.

These negotiations resulted in a decline in the rate of murders  from around 70 per 100,000 people in 2011 to almost half that number in 2012 and 2013.

Santiago looks at the gangs in political terms - poor, deprived communities which are ignored by the state and which must be given a better deal.

"There are no football teams, but there are gangs. No boy scouts, but gangs. Nothing, just gangs," Santiago told of the communities during an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera.

"They don't understand our culture. They have never taken the trouble to understand the phenomenon of the gangs," he said.

He questions why the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) , the party now in power sees the gangs in such simple terms. FMLN  was once a leftist guerrilla force and took on the government during the bloody civil war.

"It may not be the same as the civil war but it's similar," Santiago said. "They called the FMLN terrorists and negotiated with them. Now they call us criminals and terrorists."

 

Limited recognition

Roderigo Avila, the 2009 presidential candidate for the ARENA party which ran the country for the previous 20 years, told Al Jazeera the government still doesn't recognise the magnitude of the problem: The gangs are organised criminal groups.

He also questioned how gang leaders are able to give orders to create chaos from prison.

"What the government has tried has not worked," Avila said. Those in power must show "humility" and discuss strategies with their political opponents, Avila believes.

But Derek Spranger, who heads the El Salvador mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross, has first-hand experience with the gangs.

He regularly meets with gang leaders in prison. "They recognise that they are part of the problem and they want to be part of the solution," said Spranger.

"They want the government to do what governments should do - invest in the poor neighbourhoods, repair roads, repair and equip health posts and schools and provide vocational training for youth, with start-up capital for small businesses. They also want an end to indiscriminate repression by the authorities," Spranger told Al Jazeera.

Project Harmony responding to gang violence through education

OMAHA, Neb. —Project Harmony is hosting training for professionals in the Douglas and Sarpy County area in the hopes of preventing further gang violence in the Omaha metro.

The organization's Gang Training 101 will assist 80 professionals in:

signs to watch for to determine if there is gang activity in the home
safety concerns for a child or professional in the home with gang activity
how to effectively articulate and report gang presence

Project Harmony is a child protection center.

The training will be led by Sgt. Jonathan Waller, who is currently part of the gang intelligence unit with the Omaha Police Department. The two-hour training session will begin at 9 a.m.

Gang Training 101 is just one in a series of gang-related training sessions to come.  Project Harmony intends to open this training to more professionals as well as the entire community for free.

Project Harmony also hopes to help school officials by providing training to 30 local mental health providers, Aug. 10-12, on CBITS (Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools). CBITS is a national, evidence-based training designed to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression and behavioral problems and improve functioning, grades, attendance, peer and parent support, and coping skills.  

Once trained, these mental health providers will be placed in Omaha-area schools to implement CBITS and help children traumatized by violence.  Project Harmony believes that when mental health or trauma symptoms can be identified early in a child's life, a wide range of problems can be prevented, including child maltreatment.

History of gang violence
 

Gangs have been in existence every since the rise of humanity. Humans have always banded together for mutual protection and support - and to better dominate others. Gangs have always provided a way for people to more effectively get what they want, especially if it comes to force. And weaker members of society gravitate toward gangs that they feel can offer a sense of community and protection from others. The word “thug”, though, comes from India. In about 1200 CE, the word was used to describe a group of criminals that pillaged country towns. The thugs had their own slang, rituals and signs to help identify other members and create their own tight-knit society. Gangs today have similar practices of creating their own sub-language, symbols, handshakes and other identifiers.

Street gangs in the U.S. arose with Italian immigrants related to the Sicilian Mafia and others. These street gangs in New York City stole and killed to get what they wanted. One of the most famous street gang members was Al Capone, who later moved to Chicago in 1919 to help keep the other gangsters in order. Street gangs of this type were quite popular in the 1920s and 1930s.

Later, other immigrants and poor youth followed the trend set by this earlier generation. Hispanics, Asians and African Americans began banding together to form gangs in the 1950s and 1960s. By the 1970s and 1980s, there were national gang alliances, with gangs moving out of Los Angeles and New York City, and spreading across the country, with affiliates in many towns, as well as d--g routes to finance gang activities. Teen violence between opposing bands, as well as senseless violence, flourished.

Gang activity has decreased in the 2000s, but there are still concerns, and there are still gangs that are formed so that some can take what they want, acquire power and dominate, and others can feel as though they belong and are protected.

Gang violence statistics

While it is true that gang violence has been decreasing, it still exists. The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in the Department of Justice offers a National Youth Gang Survey. Some of the results from this survey include the following gang statistics:

100% of cities with a population of more than 250,000 report gang activity.
11% of rural counties report gang activity.
35% of suburban counties report gang activity.
More than half of the homicides reported in Los Angeles, and more than half of the homicides reported in Chicago, are related to gang violence.
More than 24,500 gangs are active in the U.S.
772,500 people are members of gangs in the U.S.
94% of gang members are male.
Only 2% of gangs are predominantly female.
Only 37% of gang members are under the age of 18 right now.
Gang member ethnicity breaks down this way: 47% Hispanic, 31% African American, 13% white, 7% Asian.
Gang violence costs more than $100 billion a year.

In the end, it is a sobering look at the picture of gang violence. Even though the crime rate has decreased, and a great deal of progress has been made in terms of education, and providing opportunities for would-be gang members, there are still problems to be improved upon.

STOCKTON, Calif. (KCRA) —Residents in a Stockton neighborhood said they were in shock after a 27-year-old man was killed in a drive-by shooting Wednesday afternoon, marking the city's third homicide in a 24-hour span.

When officers responded to the shooting, they located the victim with multiple gunshot wounds. He had been shot while standing outside a home in the 9500 block of Bancroft Way.

The shooter was in a black four-door car with tinted windows when he sped from the scene.

The victim was taken to the county hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Officials did not say if the shooting was gang-related or if it is related to the other shootings Tuesday.

Two people were killed Tuesday when a community gathering between neighbors and police was going on in an effort to take a stand against crime.

The first incident Tuesday happened about 3:30 p.m. near Hammer Lane when a 19-year-old was shot, police said. Witnesses said a car was hit multiple times by gunfire and the victim inside lost control and slammed into several cars.

The second homicide happened about 10 p.m. near the intersection of Bianchi Road and Calandria Street, about 3 miles from where the earlier shooting happened, officers said.

Police were looking Tuesday for a gunman who fired on a group of people in Long Beach, wounding four in a possibly gang-related shooting.

When officers responded about 10:25 p.m. Monday to a report of a shooting in the 1600 block of East 10th Street, they found a woman, a teenage boy and two men injured, Long Beach police Sgt. Megan Zabel said. The gunman fled before police arrived.

Police were still trying to determine why the four victims, all of Long Beach, were at the location.

Zabel said gunfire struck a 17-year-old boy, a 20-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man and a 31-year-old man. They were all taken to a hospital.

On Tuesday, Zabel said the four were in stable condition.

The shooting may be tied to gang activity, and gang detectives are investigating, she said.

there was a thread in one of the myspace groups for rap/hip hop category that I joined that posted pictures of gang members being beheaded and decapitated.

Not sure where it was.

But the neighborhood are similiar to New York or Houston type of apartment buildings or hpuse in London, you got me?

I can still vividly remember what I saw.

There was one in.partocular which shown a beheaded head stuck on one of the fence of the house.

The man was of African descent, he got this long black dreadlocks, his eyes still opened, and there were dollop of thick blood dripping on the severed part where it was supposed connected to a neck, it was traumatic af!

The user was soon blocked by the group admin tho.

And the thread removed.
