Plenty of pop songs are also ballads. Does that invalidates the fact that they're essentially pop songs? Pop is about infusion, it's about collaborating and experimenting with different elements, subgenres..etc.

Mariah Carey was pop, Whitney Houston was pop, Michael Jackson was pop.

I made sure to previously add the words unabashedly and rightfully before making that bragging comment to assure Whispering that there's no negative connotations behind what I said. But talking to him is like talking to a wall so no wonder he liked your comment in order to keep fooling himself into believing that I'm some sort of a troll.

Yes, I know there are pop songs that are also ballads. Also Jazz is considered a traditional pop ballad so there is that. She did win the Grammy for traditional pop album for Cheek to Cheek.  Like I said before, the artists you mentioned voices only truly shined on ballads. Every other pop song was just bells and whistles distracting from a pop voice which only is supposed to fluctuate between a couple notes in a pop song and not the full vocal range that talented singers have.  If you notice Mariah's really high notes are just after thoughts on a most of her pop songs that don't really need to be there. So is Whitney's belting on her pop songs and Michael's signature high notes are that as well. A well placed saxophone, electric guitar or other instrument can be used instead of their voices on those after thoughts. As a consumer we hear those afterthoughts on uptempo pop songs and though they are the singers voice they get lost in a sea of afterthoughts. All the sudden we hear them sing a ballad or another style of music and we are wowed by their voices or we hear someone with a not so great voice on a ballad and we are disappointed.

Please Gaga make a statement about next album's genre. Or we'll get so much meltdowns coming soon for nothing :dies:

Not gonna get into details.

Whitney was praised for her tone, pitch and vocal strength throughout the entire length of this song.

Michael was praised for his expressive vocals throughout the entire song here as well.

So no, It's not only about the belting and high notes.

Pop music is just as worthy as other genres, in fact, many pop albums made it to the most respectable & reliable acclaimed list, including the well known 1001 albums you must hear before you die list.

I just think that as of recent memory, pop music has been driven by trash, minimally talented acts that lead to its bad reputation. Sad, but true.

Yes, I agree that pop music doesn't HAVE to be the way it is.  There has always been schlocky stuff designed to be easily palatable, and label driven stuff to make a quick buck, etc, throughout the history of radio and the label system.  However, there were also plenty of outstanding artists that also got played and supported.  These days the ratio is skewed even more towards the marginally talented and more commercial thanks to technology advances.   That doesn't mean that some great stuff doesn't manage to pop through anyway, but sometimes it's in spite of the system rather than because of it.  The situation is somewhat better in the UK I think than the US.  I don't think Amy or Adele would have gotten label support or radio play if their careers had started in the US.  Its annoying that radio doesn't learn from those successes though, and just goes back to it's formulas in spite of success of better artists.

Pop SHOULD be a fusion and experimentation of styles, but mostly its watered down versions of other genres.   I think pop fans would actually accept better quality material but for some reason the radio and label systems seem to think the listening audience needs baby food most of the time instead of something with flavor.  Pop fans should be irate with the quality of music they are getting and let the commercial industry know that they don't need dumbed down music.

The sad thing is somebody like Elton John, starting now, would probably not get signed and played on pop radio.   Certainly Gaga, in her piano driven songwriter phase, generated no interest.   Fleetwood Mac ( Buckingham/Nicks incarnation) was a pop group and generated a catalog of hellaciously good songs.

She's a great singer in any genre. I just hope she uses the technique she uses in Jazz in her own music, whatever genre that may be. She has a tendency to always sing very loud and powerful when she does pop, roaring almost. I love when she plays more with soft tones like she does in jazz. You don't always have to be loud to be heard.

According to Gaga I'm a ****ing rad bitch

If she'd sing pop music following a more voice-centric approach, those performances would easily match up with her jazz vocals .

Exactly! She writes and produces her own music, therefor she can sing the way she wants to sing. I never really understood why many of her live performances dont show her vocal technique and diversity that well before.

Why is everyone freaking out about this? I was there and this statement wasn't a big deal at all. She knows that most of the audience was there to see Tony but she can hold her own as a  jazz singer as well. When she said she is a better jazz singer than pop singer she didn't mean better really. She just meant that she is able to showcase her voice more than she would if she was singing pop.

It is very hard to be objective of Lady Gaga's voice and choose in which genre she would sing best in, when you are such a fan of that voice, in general. I just really like everything about her voice, singing, talking, all over and in between. Gaga just has a really nice voice that naturally draws me in, and I have grown to love it in any way that I hear it. Gaga can sing, it does not really matter what type of music she is doing, not to me. I may not like the genre she chooses, but I can listen to her voice and admire it. There aren't many performers that I feel that way about that are alive and well today, but there are three, and Lady Gaga is one of them and the only female in the group.

The future's uncertain and the end is always near.

Many of her pop songs do not give her enough *space* to broadcast her pipes (thats something I want her to work on for LG5) so I get where that comment came from; jazz is slow, soft and loud. Its perfect for her.
