Not surprised. He's a smart business man and I knew he would leave after poor performance.

But I feel bad for him. He put a lot of work and money into this project and it didn't work.

What they could have done was instead of making this purely a music streaming platform, they could have made a streaming channel like Hulu or Netflix to promote music videos and performances in a marketable price, competitive with other video streaming services.

Also, with this sort of thing coming mostly from the artists, they would be in a prime spot to provide music behind the scenes, interviews they approved of, trailers or teasers for their upcoming albums. They could make it free by allowing artists, established and new, put commercials on for their music as any business and give artists the widespread promotion they need via online and with global reach that cable or otherwise could not extend.

Reinvent MTV for the digital age, because I feel music videos are such big productions to only be viewed on YouTube, Vevo, and others.  Yes, there are competitors, but coming from artists might bring an edge to their material people are attracted to, especially for each of their established fan bases, while maintaining the quality in their world they are most satisfied with and guess what, release material as they see fit and without pressure from labels or promoters. I understand companies like Place were trying to capitalize on this demand through their social network and in some ways, it did have an audience. However, people were attracted to these artists through their music and performances in the first place.  Even the teasers that got people interested in LM.com or even Gaga's attempted app, came with a promise of new or unreleased music people could hear no where else.

Let us face it, fans of artists are always itching for new music whether released officially or leaked online. So instead of record labels and artists sitting on those unreleased material they don't plan use, they could put enough work on them to make them listenable and then provide through this streaming video service as a way to promote artists and keep fans interested even during an artist's hiatus or off promoting season.

If Tidal was packaged differently and offered the material without costing too much to the customers, it might have gotten footing to sustain a market and at the same time update their methods and keep up with technology and where the hot money is. That's how you save the music industry, by applying new ideas of delivery with the same great music we enjoy, not by trying to resell the same dead horse on the same broken wagon.

Not surprised whatsoever. Tidal is just a terrible obstacle in Jay Z's empire that he wants to rid of and is having trouble doing so. Tidal was a terrible business move on his part from the get-go.

The amount of flops that have happened over the past couple of years...nobody has had a decent and successful time putting out anything lately whether it's music or even a streaming service... :saladga:

Welp, it's not like everyone didn't see that coming!

Where's Nicki, with her cries of racism now? No one wanted to mess with an unfamiliar start up service,  when they already had spotify. Apple was the only service that could compete, due to people being familiar with the brand and ease of service. Tidal never had a chance. I can't believe so many artists thought it did, just because JayZ was associated with it. :smh:

Drake was smart to listen to Jimmy and Gaga was smart to stay out of this Tidal mess! Stick with Jimmy, Gaga, he knows what he is doing!

This was a perfect summing up of the tricky situation Tidal was in from the get-go. People were already fine with established streaming sites, namely Spotify, and knew that Apple music was coming up real soon and it would be far more reasonably priced and therefore, preferred to wait to spend their money on that. Launching so close to Apple Music's launch was one of the worst decisions I have ever seen from a supposed genius businessman. It just goes to prove that never hearing the word "no" for years is the worst thing that can happen to someone rich. Factor in all the other downsides like the "exclusive" content that would make it onto free online outlets eventually, the extremely limited range of artists to listen to, the lack of any non-mainstream, non-millionare artists being part of it and of course, the ridiculously high pricing for stuff that other streaming sites give you for free. Not everyone knows this, but in the UK, the prices were even higher. In the US, it was $9.99 for standard subscription, $19.99 for luxury subscription. In the UK, we were expected to pay £9.99 ($15.50) for standard, £19.99 ($31.18) for luxury. You read that right, I didn't just substitute the dollar signs, but Tidal sure did. They, for whatever reason, wanted UK citizens to pay more than Americans. Yet another reason why I believe Jay Z doesn't understand the British market. And they tried to tell us this wasn't about greed?

Who's Jimmy, by the way? I didn't hear this story.
