Travis 543
Most of the rumored pre fame pics out there are fake btw. And yeah media is all over a big butt but not when its on a black girl. Besides Beyonce what other woman of color is praised for her body? There's not many. The features of curves, breasts and a nice butt are great when on a non POC but as soon as a woman of color has those features(and embraces them) she becomes raunchy and ridiculous (Nicki and K. Michelle) for example. THAT'S what Nicki was talking about. Anaconda definitely deserved the VOY nomination. Imagine if someone like Katy Perry or Britney Spears made that. MTV would be all over it. Everyone's glossing over the fact that it's not just her body type, it's because she's a POC

Jjang 2,262
I think you're missing the point of what she was trying to say. Whether her curves are fake or real does not determine how valid her words are. I also don't think she was referring to her butt. She was referring to curvy and fuller females in general. Just because some media outlets glorify curvy girls doesn't mean all outlets do. I feel like she should have been nominated for voty and best choreo because I believe it did have a cultural impact. It's video broke a vevo record. It's single cover prompted lots of memes. People were dressing up like her in the vid for Halloween. People were doing her choreo. She deserved a nomination for voty and best choreo. When gaga gained weight and became fuller the media was calling her fat so I highly doubt the media as a whole glorifies curvy females. I applaud people like Nicki, Demi, and Gaga for for embracing their curves and standing up for curvy girls. Also, hi. I am new to the site even though I been creeping on here since the post-btw black out. Lol People acknowledging the video for the joke that it is and deliberately choosing to poke fun at it through memes and Halloween costumes is simply a phase of a non substantial craze, not a cultural movement. The entire thing was already forgotten about a month after it premiered. When Gaga suddenly gained weight she had a noticeable amount of fat and cellulite especially from her waist down to her thighs (including her ass) - all which are the most 'crucial' body parts for a woman according to society and the media's way of viewing a female figure. I want you to sit with your thoughts for a minute and think about why this is groundbreaking or revolutionary, I stand corrected if you provide me with a convincing answer. http://www.gotceleb.com/wp-content/uploads/celebrities/nicki-minaj/anaconda-music-video-and-screencaps/Nicki-Minaj:-Anaconda-Music-Video-and-Screencaps-04.jpg

Where's her afro? draids? the producers made sure the entire video was white washed before they released it. Don't you dare telling me that video celebrates natural African beauty. Just don't.Regardless of my minimized rant right there, Nicki is not the first and certainly not the last black woman to present herself in a s-xual manner. Here's a list of POC that are considered to be massively s-xy : (from memory alone)- Kim Kardashian- Rihanna- Nicole Scherzinger- Tyra Banks- Beyoncé- Jennifer Lopez- Zoë Kravitz- Zendaya- Zoe Saldana- Kelly Rowland- Ciara

SlayedForTheGod 665
Also speaking to this point, how many successful dark skinned black girls do you see on tv or in the music scene. white media controls everything and they only allow muted color in the world. I did not say movement but at that moment she had an impact. No matter what the intent was behind the costumes and memes, people were still doing it. You don't have to be groundbreaking or revolutionary to have an impact. Also you really don't have to flaunt your cellulite around to be an advocate for curvy girls. That's why I chose my words carefully and said curvy and fuller instead of just singling out girls with cellulite. When I refered to Gaga I was just saying the media did not glorify her weight gain. Whether or not it was the skinniest girl or the biggest we should be happy that someone is speaking up for curvy girls or even standing by their opinion like you and I are doing now. And if I came off as if I was attacking you that was not my intent at all.
DemeLarell 931
And the only reason why I specifically did not bring up color is because I was only referring to what Nicki was saying lol. If she didn't specifically talk about color I wasn't either lol.

How is that empowering to black women? how?I'm not an idiot, I'm very aware of the white privilege throughout society and the industry. I'm well educated in this department, but what I am saying is that Nicki's is not exactly the one to look up to in terms of forming a resistance to any kind of privilege, she did not break any social taboos, she's certainly not doing anything to promote actual black culture and she's far from being the keynote to resolving these issues. All body figures (black or white) in Anaconda are well fit and shaped, thin waist line & firm thighs and boobs - that literally became the flag of s-xualization and objectification of women in the media. Female empowerment is a tool used by feminist. The goal of a feminist is for all s-xes to have equal options and oppurtunities. GUY talks about how being submissive sometimes gives you the power. The meaning behind the Anaconda song has been stated plenty of times. It was sort of social satire. and: "All body figures (black or white) in Anaconda are well fit and shaped, thin waist line & firm thighs and boobs - that literally became the flag of s-xualization and objectification of women in the media. "Yeah s-xualization of WHITE women in media. I've made my point about how there's not many relevant "s-xy" black women. Nicki is breaking social taboos. The taboo that black women cant own their s-xuality. Something that black women have been trying to do for forever(Missy,Lil Kim) but Nicki is more successful at it cause social media lets her interact closely with her fans. She's teaching black girls that THEY own their body. If they want to use it to please a man that's completely fine. They still know it's their body. SlayedForTheGod 665
And what Nicki does with her body is up to her. None of us know if her breast or butt are fake. So what if they are. If that's what made her happy then it's completely fine. It's still her body.
