NASA plans to share a discovery from its Kepler Space Telescope in a news conference scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday, a press release announced. Calling a news conference for the Kepler Telescope, a mission dedicated to finding Earth-like planets in so-called hospitable zones, is unusual. According to CTV, a tantamount goal of the Kepler mission is to find Earth-like planets suitable for supporting the existence of liquid water, a necessary ingredient for life. The mission seeks planets a perfect distance away from a star that would likely maintain liquid water, known as the Goldilocks Zone. Too close to a star and water evaporates. Too far and water freezes to ice. The announcement of a press conference has lit the Internet on fire with speculation. Many hope the Kepler Mission engineers will announce finding an Earth size planet with an abundance of oxygen. “Abundance of oxygen suggests the existence of life,” one Redditor wrote. “Oxygen is too reactive to stay in an atmosphere without constantly being replenished.” 'Another Earth?': NASA hints at planetary discovery NASA is teasing space enthusiasts, hinting that it may have some big news to announce about other Earth-like planets in the Milky Way. The space agency said it plans to share a new discovery from its Kepler Space Telescope at a news conference scheduled for 9 a.m. PDT on Thursday. The Kepler mission, launched in 2009, is dedicated to finding Earth-like planets in what scientists call the "habitable zone," or the region near stars where orbiting planets might have the conditions to support the existence of liquid water. Water is a key ingredient for potentially sustaining life, but if a planet is too close to a star, high temperatures cause evaporation. If a planet is too far, freezing occurs. Since its launch, the Kepler telescope has discovered more than 1,000 planets and more than 3,000 planet candidates, including those in the habitable zone. But on Wednesday, NASA hinted that the latest discovery may be one of the most earth-like planets ever found. "Exoplanets, especially small Earth-size worlds, belonged within the realm of science fiction just 21 years ago," a press release by the agency said. "Today, and thousands of discoveries later, astronomers are on the cusp of finding something people have dreamed about for thousands of years -- another Earth." The suggestive statement already has the Internet abuzz with theories that the agency might have found a planet capable of sustaining life. To find out if NASA really has discovered "another Earth," the agency is encouraging space exploration fans to tune into a livestream of Thursday's teleconference, and to check out their Kepler mission website. YOU GUYS have no idea how excited I am for this. If NASA has in fact discovered a new planet that either has life on it (in forms of radio communication waves, light pollution, etc) or has the ingredients of Earth (water, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, good atmospheric pressure, common mass, etc) then that would inspire people + the government to put more funding into space travel. I am so excited to see what they share. Even if they send a probe going at current technological speed; it would take thousands of years.. that is if it's within 10 light years away (probably isn't) But if this news is indeed a new planet with life or the building blocks of life; the world needs to come together as one and get there. Imagine all the money spent on wars. NASA has some of the most intelligent and secretive people in the world.
