Excellent post.

I think with the way things are going, it seems electrical and solar power has shown some promise, but likely not until the very distant future.

Wind seems to be getting a lot of development too... I think regional advantages will dictate what type of energy is the best option.

Hollywood is entertainment pure and simple ... they might add real or realistic scenarios in their productions, but unless its a documentary, they make movies to get people to buy tickets, pure and simple.

Alternative energy is the way we are gonna 'save the planet'  renewable ways to produce electricity and eventually transportation will be a necessity as oil runs out. There is a finite amount of oil, and keeping it for irreplaceable undoable alternatives makes the most sense. Crude oil has so many uses right now that taking it out of fuel production one day might be a necessity.

Polluting the atmosphere is never a good idea.  What is actual pollution and causing climate change remains to be proven imo.  CO2 from natural sources, like wild fires, volcanoes, and animals ect. will continue no matter what humans do.  How much humans can release with or with out causing huge climate shifts is still under study.  There are ways to remove CO2 or even use it beneficially so the balance to the equation here is pretty complex..if not beyond current technology to estimate accurately.

Personally, I would be happy if no Crude oil was involve in fuels at all, but alternate energy hasn't shown that it can step in yet.  Continued research and development seems to have promise.  Getting things done politically looks like another obstacle as well.

i dont know about you guys. Talking about crude oils role in energy and renewables replacing oil... :rip:

you guys do realize that with the exeption of heating oil and the odd oil plant here and there , very little crude oil is actually used for generating electricity right?

over 80% of global crude consumption is for transportation. The remaining 20% is mostly for oil products like: asphalt, shingles, paints, beauty products, plastics, fertilizers, pesticides etc

Only a fractuon of crude oils consumption is for power generation. The fossil fuels used for power is mostly Coal and Natural Gas

That makes a lot of sense. I've also noticed small wind turbines are starting to be used to power homes, alongside solar power (solar has been used for a while though).

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

I didn't say that oil was used for electricity ... there are oil burning plants but they're expensive to operate and only if there is no alternative.

Take oil out of transportation should be and will be the drive for a cleaner environment.  It can't be done right now because there aren't any alternatives ...

Electric cars for urban transportation helps, but not enough people use them because of the purchase cost and the after market support doesn't exist.

Battery technology needs to improve.  Tesla has proved that quality electric only automobiles will work , but traveling long distance with one wouldn't be practical.

Fast charging, longer batteries are the only way to take oil to fuel out of transportation right now.

Petroleum products for transportation will always be needed I think along with the many other uses, but burning it up to 'go' should be on the out list imo.

not so distant. Solar has improved a lot very quickly. In fact, in sunny climates its even a competitive source of energy. With mass production it can be even cheaper

wind has a good EROEI also especially in places with consistant wind

what we need are gas plants to remain on standby for when renewables fail. Renewables unfortunately have reliability issues

wind turbines that aren't turning may be disabled or not enough wind... But sometimes they stop due to low demand for electricity ... If there are more windmills than electricity draw.

thats why i said, renewable energy atm still has a tendency to be unreliable and inconsistent

Theres actually a big natural gas plant right by where i work... its off 70% of the time...

they only run it during peak hours, and when power generation from other sources fail to meet demand its also turned on as a backup... during hot humid summer days its also on most of the day

we need fossil fuel plants for now as backups... avoid using it when possible but they cant be totally removed

we could let terrorist have their way for a while ... Lower the electricity demand from all the dead people ....but that's too republican.  ...  8-/

The thing about the coastlines changing is that we can't prevent them from changing. No matter what we do, so much water won't stay frozen forever.

Global warming sped it along, but let's not pretend like it wouldn't have happened otherwise. And it doesn't matter when it happens, we will still never be prepared for it cause we're dumb b---hes.
