Hmm her opinion isn't really that harmful, I guess it comes down to what "marriage" really is and the root of it  I don't see her way near as harmful because it's literally just the wording that's different, whereas all the rest would be the same. Having different names for the same thing isn't a big deal in my opinion, but then why even have different names if it's the same thing? I'm kinda on the fence with accepting and seeing no problem with her mindset and with rejecting and disagreeing with her

U can run for chancellor till the day u die. Also the opinions of the voting demographic doesn't change. More than half of everybody who voted the last time was over 60. Germany is old and won't change till the next 40 years tbh.

Well I don't think it's a big deal whether the term is marriage or not if the rights are the same, the rights are more important than the term for me  But that works in the reverse also, if it's not a big deal then why can't it be called marriage? We've come a long way with everything else so inclusion of same-s-x within the term "marriage" shouldn't seem out of the realm of possibility at all. I just think rights are more important so I'd rather the focus be on that than simple meaning of words and so on  For now anyway, one step at a time

People don't even vote for her because of her policies, they vote for her because she's Merkel.

I think it's a big deal because by giving them something with a different title it conveys the mindset of, "You rightfully should be able to have what I have, but I don't want you to be part of MY group while you do it."

Like giving "coloreds" a separate water fountain. 

It reinforces the idea that homos-xual relationships are "different," which can perpetuate an us vs. them mentality. And it caters to people who are against marriage equality by offering a sort of compromise so they can have their sacred tradition to themselves, and frankly those people don't deserve to be catered to when their platform is built on hate.
