Merkel said she didn’t oppose gay marriage, but would want it to be called something else. The head of state answered questions from the online community in an interview with German Youtube star Florian Mundt, alias LeFloid, as part of the ‘Gut Leben’ (good living) campaign. ‘I’m someone who is very supportive of us eliminating all discrimination,’ Merkel said when asked for her personal stance on marriage equality. ‘We have come a long way; when I remember, 25 years ago, many people didn’t dare to say that they are gay or lesbian. Luckily we overcame this; you can enter a partnership, a civil partnership.’ In June, members of Merkel’s Christian Democratic party sent an open letter claiming marriage equality would see the institution of marriage lost. ‘For me, personally, marriage is a man and a woman living together. Having different names for the same thing isn't a big deal in my opinion, but then why even have different names if it's the same thing? That's her own personal crap that should not even be on the table on a political level. If she wants to argue semantics she can do that at home at the dinner table, in politics things are what they are.Mundt is absolutely correct. If legally speaking the arrangement is the same, there shouldn't be any difference on a social level either. The only solution I can think of is to ban the word marriage in general. She said that in an interview with a youtuber to get connected with the youth. Her opposing marriage for all and cannabis made her a huge backlash among young people, thankfully. Why hold on to tradition while sacrificing equality in the present? Maybe we shouldn't call two men loving each other romantically "love" too then. It's ridiculous.
