Israeli officer who murdered Palestinian boy goes free

B'Tselem, Israeli human rights organization, has released video footage of the incident on July 3 where a Palestinian teenager was shot dead by an Israeli army officer. The 17-year old boy had thrown a stone at the officer's vehicle in the West Bank. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said at the time that the colonel got out of the vehicle and ordered the stone-throwers to stop, firing a warning shot into the air. When the attack continued, he opened fire at the main perpetrator, it added. The IDF stressed that the officer believed he was in "imminent mortal danger" and several members of the government praised his actions.

Shortly after this statement, several witnesses countered the IDF's version of the story, talking to the Washington Post and The Guardian. Palestinian doctors also argued that the boy was shot in the back and the side of the head after the boy died of his injuries.

And now the video showing the beginning of the incident has been released, showing that the witnesses' true story: the teenager threw a stone with a group of friends, ran as soon as the vehicle came to a stop and was chased by the officer and his colleague before being killed.

B'Tselem's statement:

"There is no doubt that the shattering of the jeep's front window with a stone endangered the passengers when it happened. However, Kasbeh was shot in the back after the fact, when he was already running away and posing no 'mortal threat' to the soldiers. Feeling a sense of danger is not enough to justify any action. Military open-fire regulations permit shooting at the legs of a suspect in order to facilitate his arrest. They do not permit killing him by firing three shots at his upper body."

The Times of Israel reports that, in response to the video surfacing, the officer in question was questioned under caution by the IDF's criminal investigation unit. He was released without charges after pleading that he acted according to military protocol.

Looks like lethal force was unwarranted.

Sigh, not this unjustified scenario again. Its incredibly disappointing to see the officer getting away with it.

Well, I think it can be. It's just always the same people who ruin it for everybody.

Anyway, I do think it's important to keep up to date about these things. I agree that this conflict gets more threads than other conflicts and that's kind of a problem I guess, but I think that's an outcome of threads about other issues not being popular enough.

Most of us are capable of discussing it (if not all topics) in a mature manner, surely addressing the specific problem-makers (and they're blatantly obvious to all of us) would be a quicker and more beneficial solution - as awareness of the issue is important imo

Alright. But if I see one single personal attack from a GGDer to another GGDer about them personally and not the ISSUE at hand, I am so totally infracting that member.

I find these articles interesting and discussion helps me see points of views that I wouldn't otherwise have contact with ...

What gets me going is personal hostility regarding opinions that aren't in agreement with  their own.

while I can see that many times the actions of the IDF are pretty extreme if not criminal ... they aren't the sole offenders.

its totally blind to look at Israel as the only people committing crimes.

I think of it like this :   A caged Tiger is constantly being poked at and getting rocks thorn at it...  The minute it gets free.  .... What do you think that Tiger will do?

The soldier shouldn't get away with nothing, though the boy is not innocent. He didn't deserved to die though.

video

"This incident was widely publicized because Shomer has such a high military rank, he is the officer in charge of the Jerusalem regional brigade, and because Kasbeh lost two brothers, aged 11 and 15, during the Second Intifada. But in general, incidents of soldiers beating or killing Palestinians who present little or no threat are common.  Sometimes, these incidents are recorded on video or in still images. A soldier deliberately shooting a blindfolded, handcuffed Palestinian in the foot. Or sniper shooting an unarmed boy from a roof. A soldier opening the back door of his armored vehicle to shoot a high velocity tear gas canister into the face of a protestor. A scrum of soldiers from the Kfir Brigade beating senseless an unarmed, middle aged man after they’d already restrained him. The list is very long.

Almost invariably, these incidents end with the army investigating and exonerating itself, or perhaps sentencing one or two perpetrators to a month in military prison or even time served — while a soldier who criticizes the army is sentenced to a week in jail, even though he was off duty when he expressed said opinion.

There is no reason to expect this incident will end differently. It’s not as though Kasbeh’s family can pursue a case against Shomer in civil court. They are not citizens of Israel. They are residents of territory under Israel’s military occupation.

A man with a gun was driving in a military vehicle when a boy threw a stone that hit his windshield. The man in the vehicle was not injured, but he was very angry. And he was armed not only with a gun, but with the sense of power and entitlement that comes from being a lord of the land. So he chased and shot the boy, because he lost his temper. And because he could."

This sucks so bad. And because the Palestinian territories are hardly recognized by any other major country, they have absolutely no chance of getting even for these kinds of things. Which is why a recognition is so needed. But of course they don't wanna support a terrorist organization at the head. Understandable (although - what's more important? Pride or giving people a voice?) but annoying.

One of the biggest stumbling blocks to stability and peace.

Israel seems to be fanning the flames with their continued building of new settlments so I don't see any peace over there right now...
