"costs pennies to make" Right.

You cannot compare hard labour with you putting vocals on someone elses lyrics.

And "song lasts a lifetime" ?

more like few months. :awkney:

This is actually a good point.

Look, I get what Demi is saying, and I'm sure many indie/struggling artists out there really appreciate the message, but the comparison is bad fitted. When she says "five dollar" coffee, I assume she means Starbucks. Starbucks has delicious coffee and pastries, for sure, but when money is tight, NO ONE is paying five bucks for coffee when they can make it at home or get gas station coffee for a fraction of the price (or they simply go without). I enjoy my music for "free" thanks to the radio and free streaming services. If I really like something, I have to be patient and save for a day I can afford it. Right now every single dollar counts, and a song I may love now but get tired of in a month or two (which is about 98% of what I hear on the radio) I'm not wasting my money on, when that dollar or two can get me coffee or a burger at McD's running between classes or work. Music isn't a necessity, but keeping my energy up and my mind sharp is.

But I do appreciate what she is saying.

Just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show. I should really just relax."

The actual funny part is that pop fans refuse to pay for albums yet use sales as an indicator of success.

first of all, not everyone buys coffee from starbucks( i prefer dunkin donuts' coffee personally, sometimes i'll get a frappe from starbucks tho), second most songs cost $1.29, yes there are some that are 99 cents or less, but for the most part it's $1.29. Now if the song is really hot, i'll try to buy it, but i cant afford to buy every single out there else i'd go broke. i have to pick and choose. So I choose the really good ones. others i might illegally download, oh well. now im not into demi so i tend to bypass her stuff.i dont even download her stuff.

im not starving but im having a hard life asshole

funny laughing about others problems right ?

i wont buy music deal with it :)

Then chances are you won't go in and buy a five dollar cup of coffee several times a week, either.

That's the point here...not that you should take money from your tight weekly food budget to buy music, or not that starving people should buy music. Starving people aren't shelling out five dollars for a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

First of all, with the firsts 300M downloads they recover the investment. From there, the rest is 100 per cent profit and that makes them millonaires with only one song recorded once and copied millions of times with out any cost.

Unfortunately, these workers will get very little of the actual profit of a cup of coffee from Starbucks. Just because Starbucks charges more for a cup of coffee does not mean that these farmers get paid more if they are gathering beans that eventually end up at Starbucks.

Paying five dollars for a cup of coffee lines the pockets of the stockholders and top executives at Starbucks. It helps them buy their vacation homes and boats. It doesn't filter down to the poor farmers, not anymore than you buying coffee from your local grocery store.

Some songs last a lifetime. The music I purchase gives me much more enjoyment than a cup of coffee, that might give me a jolt of energy for a couple of hours. I can go back to a song or an album for years. A cup of coffee is gone forever in a matter of a few hours. I believe that's the point, that music has great value in our lives...at least as much as a cup of coffee. Lol

She's kinda right...but I'd add that if you're using a legal streaming service - Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc. -, that will somehow benefit the artist and team behind that song you like, you're cool as well.

ATTENTION: (bad) jokes and sarcasm are still a thing, so don't take everything I say literally. Thank you.

some of you really don't get it... it's sad that this generation feels so ****ing entitled that they don't care about music enough to pay for it

I know, I wasn't focused here on Starbucks, but whatever coffee is in the cup, it didn't come from the sky. The farmers, those who roast it, those who pack and distribute it, the workers in coffee shop etc. are all responsible. Like she says "writers, producers etc."  I don't buy anything from Starbucks, I make it at home, but some could argue I spend too much on Ethiopian coffee beans. But hard labour still cannot be compared to writing or singing a song. Most of the pop music today is disposable and generic, usually you get very fast tired of it and radio and streaming is offering it "for free". And even in 80s and 90s, singles were just used for promo, people mostly bought albums they like and they went to tour. And artists weren't complaining.

You said well, some music lasts, but it seems pretentious of her to think that her own music is worthy of lasting a lifetime. At least I don't think so.
