Its her vocals. Shes discovered a new way to use her voice which is demonstrated in Dope. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. To me on Dope, its just way too ****ing much. Like I can't sit and listen to it its like shes warbling and crying and drunkenly slurring. Not my taste at all. I like the production, I like the piano with the subtle electronics slowly coming in behind it as the track goes on. But her vocals.....

Alas, its one of her most critically acclaimed songs ever actually. It was almost universally considered an album highlight, so clearly people that appreciate music get what she was doing there. I just don't care for it.

Well that's like in the old time, artists who talks about their depression and tend to be over the top are more loved.

I love Dope so much but I can't appreciate it fully when I know that songs like Brooklyn Nights didn't make the cut while Dope and JnD made it...

Mister Gaga

Dope is perfect. The lyrics are perfect, the tone is perfect.

It's just very difficult to listen to, I find. I mean, it's not necessarily a bad song. Just the slurred vocals, lyrics I can't really relate to, and the overall sound of the song make it hard to listen to...

that's not a metaphor its a true statement.  Gaga literally had to decide that people she loved were more important than getting high.  How can that possibly be "weak".

It's funny, because I when I saw your avatar I knew this was not gonna be a positive comment. Lol.

The term "Dope" can perceived two ways: literally and metaphorically. Personally I think the song is about both. However, I do see it more in the metaphoric sense.

She is alluding to "Dope" (weed) as a representation of herself at the current moment. She is telling her lover/loved ones, "I need you more than I need my own selfishness/self". Personally I found that using the d--g as a metaphor in this specific song was a bit of a weak move.

Why? Because the song PRETENDS to be honest and sincere, when truthfully she is STILL hiding behind the same old metaphors. She's coating herself with this "Dope", instead of out rightly mentioning, "Hey, I'm willing to your best interest before my own. I'm willing to give up my selfishness and be a better person"

It's not that I dislike the song, I just listen to it when I'm in a certain mood. I usually skip the song when I listen to the full ARTPOP.

The song's sad and difficult for me to listen to while listening to ARTPOP as a whole. I reserve that song for another time or mood. However, I don't think Dope is badly written or has bad vocals.

She over-sings Dope majorly and it stands out on ARTPOP, and not in a good way at all.

I always felt "IWBWY" would've been a more receptive GP song. They would've "understood" it more. When I first heard Dope, truthfully I was still in favor of IWBWY. But seeing Dope live was what won me over.

Her vocals were so raw and you could hear that in the studio version as well. She struggled with this addiction in the past and I don't believe she was "pretending". She needs us/her guy more than she needs the temporary high "dope" gives her. Selfless indeed. Her metaphors aren't generic at all BUT they aren't that complex all the time either.

Sometimes people over a--lyze when she's being very straightforward lol.
