As some of you may remember, several organizations such as Human Rights Watch had demanded Israel to be charged for violating children's rights in the summer conflict of 2014 where 557 children died and over 3000 were injured. According to UN children's rights organization Unicef many of these children will suffer from these injuries for the rest of their lives. The total count of Palestinian deaths extends to over 2000, mostly civilians. 67 Israeli soldiers and 6 Israeli civilians were also killed.

According to Reuters, both Israel and Hamas had been placed on an early draft of the "black list", listing countries and military/terrorist groups who had violated children's rights during 2014. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, however, took them off (after Israel Prime Minister Netanyahu had asked the UN to take them off the list, referring to the presence of terrorist groups like ISIS on it, and arguing that it was shameful for them to be included next to them), also scrapping Hamas. Expectedly, Israel officials criticized this last move. Israel's UN ambassador urged the UN to stop endlessly criticizing Israel and focus on Hamas.

UN sources claim that the decision of Ban Ki-moon was "unusual". Still, the UN report shows a marked criticism of Israel in the 2014 conflict. "The unprecedented and unacceptable scale of the impact on children in 2014 raises grave concerns about Israel's compliance with international humanitarian law ... (and) excessive use of force," he said. The UN report also criticized "Palestinian armed groups" for indiscriminate rocket fire that endangered children in Israel and Gaza.

"Israel acted to defend its residents from attacks by a murderous terrorist group, which has no qualms about placing Palestinian civilians, including children, in the line of fire," Nahshon, Israel's Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum criticized the United Nations for keeping Israel off the list and for equating his Islamist faction, which he said was defending the Palestinians against Israeli "state terror," with Israel.

Despite the higher child death toll of the Israel/Palestine conflict, conflicts resulting in lesser deaths were still included on UN's black list.

Thoughts?

Is the UN being too soft on both Israel and Hamas?
Is there a lack of awareness about children in military conflicts in general?
Is it useful to make a "black list" with countries/groups violating children's rights?

Poor children, they never experienced the beautiful side of the world. The injustice is too much.

Nothing unexpected in that decision, I'd heard of this list in the past few weeks but what exactly does the blacklist part of it amount to? :emma:

I googled the definition of blacklist and it seems to be "a list of people or groups regarded as unacceptable or untrustworthy", most blacklists that I had been aware of had a punitive effect though - like the EU airline blacklist. Ignore my rambling about nothing :emma:

Well, yeah, that's why I added the question at the end: what's the point of even including anyone if no serious efforts are made to spread awareness of child suffering/death in these conflicts? Or maybe people just don't care in general. I mean, looking at the amount of replies in this thread alone :smh:

Oh right, then it that case I see it more as just bureaucracy and listing for the sake of it. Anybody who would look up these lists are already going to be aware of most of the groups and conflicts listed so it really has no physical purpose at resolving anything. The list itself is so little publicised that it won't even have a name-and-shame effect on the national forces listed.

It made the Israeli govt feel embarassed and raised awareness of Israel's policies, so it served its purpose.

Usually lists are to make lists  they don't really serve a purpose usually.

So that's it? it's all about embarrassing Israel? nothing about maybe stopping a terror organization causing all of this mess and using children as human shields for their terrorists? :smh:

UN is a joke. Nothing new.

Yes. Because embarassment will help.

It's a child abuse list, and Israel should be on it. And yes, it does have a point - raising awareness of Israel's war crimes, which is extremely important because right now in Europe we're slowly becoming more pro-Palestine (and pro-two state solution).

The UN is very important and also plays a role in supporting the poor and supporting those people hit by war, lobbys for basic human rights and international aid and much more:shrug:

Israel shouldn't be on it and if you think you can anyhow judge Israel for protecting its citizens in a disproportionate battle against an Islamic-terror organization that controls land your'e wrong. It is careless and indifferent and does not promote peace in any way because you're simply ignoring the problem. But you must be a big expert on warfare and geopolitics so why should I even bother you with my concerns of being killed by a rocket or a terrorist that will come to kidnap me through a tunnel from Gaza. :fan:

The fact is that Europeans (especially Western Europeans) have no single clue how it is to be under current attack and being under threat all the time to get killed by some crazy terrorist. That's why so many people don't and don't even try to understand the situation in Israel. :smh:

Exactly. I'm so glad to have you here. Show your European sisters the light King Simon. :applause:
