G7 Agree On Carbon-Free By 2100

At a G7 Metting (USA, Canada, UK, Germany, Italy, France and Japan) they agreed to have phased out all Carbon emmissions and to have a carbon free economy by the end of the century...

 

Canada & USA may have the hardest time accomplishing that as both have large energy sectors, and both are large Countries with much transportation distances required. North America is also known for using vast amounts of petro based fertilizers and pesticides on its agriculture.

​i dont know that solar power to the extreme some people suggest is the answer. Some climates lack sunlight... where i live for isntance in winter we get 8-9 hours tops... and in summer many rainy days are not uncommon. Solar Power could never be reliable to be more than a supplement in many regions

 

Theres also concerns about how long tellerium (a vital element in the way solar panels work but is 3X more rare than gold) could last for if the entire world went solar, especially since its not easy to recyle.

 

Lastly oil will never run out technically. The question is more a matter of when we stop drilling for anymore because its useless...

 

Theres always gonna be a deposit here or a deposit there. But if movign drilling equipment and paying workers is gonna cost you $100,000 to get 100 barrels of oil in a tiny deposit... oil would have to be at $1000 a barrel just to break even :rip:

 

There will also always be vast reserves of oi that is either rediculously deep, or super hard to frack in some geological locations etc.

 

Oil will never run out, simply because it will become far too much of an expensive economic hassle to get the hardest to get reserves far long before it were to actually run out

 

Even more ironically tho, we have so much "Proven reserves" now (reserves considered extractable with todays technology AND that are economical to get) that before supply became a problem, wed have destroyed the environment totally. The ecological damage will be a bigger threat than supply considering how much we still have available to burn

That's not fast enough. Every country has a growing economy again, so no excuse for no investments in solar/wind/earth warmth/industry warmth/

Hopefully in the near future we can make thorium reactors.. it needs way more investment.

What does it mean, carbon-free? No more big pickups and roaring muscle cars in 2100? Not here for it, sorry. And carbon is used in many applications, steel, carbon fibre for example.

That's not fast enough. Every country has a growing economy again, so no excuse for no investments in solar/wind/earth warmth/industry warmth/

Hopefully in the near future we can make thorium reactors.. it needs way more investment.

No one said not to make investmemts. Of u read article and other articles they also have targets for 2030 and 2050

 

theres suppostu be immediate reductions... But a carbon free economy involves a lot more than just green electricity. You need to totally rebalance the entire economy. That takes a long time!

​electric cars are not totally green. their batteries require lithium or alternatives that must be mined and are not renewable. However a portion can be recycled which helps

 

ATM you gotta wonder if they are really better. 47% of worlds electricity is still coal... Coal is WORSE of a polluter than crude oil. Not to mention oil and natural gas make up a big portion of the rest of the electrical grid anyway

 

So indirectly, electric cars might actually be worse than burning gasoline. Id focus on the green electricity itself before worrying about electric cars. makes sense

 

cause with green energy, whether cars also go green or not, you achieve something... but if cars go green and electricity is uses doesnt, your still back to square 1

Grey electricity electric cars (so coal) produces 50% less CO2 than normal cars. Hybrids about 8% less. Both together, 100% less (excluding production).

We need to dscourage coal use, encourage green electricity use, encourage electric cars :shrug: all three combined and we'll get there.

​yes but thats coal directly in the car which is different... if its electric, your using coal produced electricity. its not the same thing

Grey electricity means electricity produced with coal, aka polluting energy. In my country you can choose between grey or green electricity (I think the latter costs more).
