I'm not sure what's true and what's not - but I think it's very possible that any artist/label can do this

Honestly, I don't think you can say that when she wanted Unconditionally to hit, but sales and fan popularity drove Dark Horse to be an early single. If she were buying hits, then this would not be  so.

ofc. riri has it too.

interscope had a radio deal for BTW and they also bought twitter followers in 2012.

Remember that you are unique. Like everyone else.

In Wikipedia, it says that payola is illegal. So, how is she getting away with it? No shade against Katy, I love her and her music, but just wondering.

I don't think she's buying twitter followers but I high amount of the accounts that do follow her are inactive/fake but this is normal with most celebrities twitter followers, even Gaga's

Katy and Bieber have a much bigger true/fake accounts ratio.

Somewhere I don't think it's by physical money...she kisses up to people. This was very evident when she sent radio stations everywhere "Birthday" cakes...:awkney:

Stream my new single, 💜"Heartbeat"💜, on Spotify!

Well, I'm not familiar with this thing but "payola" is just based on a few (radio) people's comments then made "a thing" by her haters. I don't really think she/her label is faking her popularity that much, but if she is, it will be terrible yet hilarious to see the fall when the label drops the support and all fake stats are gone. In the end, it's just lying to yourself, but it might work as marketing. For example, many companies buy views for movie and game trailers to make them popular looking that people get interested in them.

This is all just because most of people are group animals and don't care much about other things if they don't seem popular. That makes me giggle and sad. They are missing so much good stuff that's out there, and I thought internet would ease the pain to get more unique taste when it comes to movies, games and music, but instead of that, people are just listening to the same stuff and fanboying same artist.s It's okay but for some people can't even give a chance for a new artist if they aren't popular already, which is damn ridiculous.

right I kinda noticed that. and didn't Gaga's followers get demoted at one point? Or was that youtube views?

We talked about this in my class the other day! Payola is illegal, but it's not illegal for KP to give giftcards to radio stations so that they may give to listeners. For example, (this is figurative and indicative of the entire pop industry, not just Katy) her label will send so many giftcards to give to radio stations to give out to their listeners. This, in turn will drive the station to play Dark Horse more often. She's not paying the radio with cash, and technically not paying them at all so this is how she gets away with it.
