ESPN has also released a statement concerning the Arthur Ashe Courage Award:

"The Arthur Ashe Courage Award is meant to honor individuals whose contributions transcend sports through courageous action. Sometimes that courage is demonstrated over the course of a lifetime and sometimes it is demonstrated in a single act that shines a light on an important contemporary issue. At all times, there are many worthy candidates. This year, we are proud to honor Caitlyn Jenner embracing her identity and doing so in a public way to help move forward a constructive dialogue about progress and acceptance."

Thank goodness there wasn't even a meeting about it and a conclusion was reached immediately. I don't understand how even the most extreme of transphobes could possibly think there is any issue here. Bruce was a biological man when he won that medal (I know he was a woman inside, but the whole point of transgenderism is that you're trapped in the body of the wrong gender), so there is absolutely no problem. A biological man competing in women's sports and vice versa would be a different story. Bruce Jenner and Caitlyn Jenner are two completely different people. Bruce competed, Caitlyn did not. If Caitlyn went back into sport under the name Bruce Jenner and identified as a man and won a gold medal, then I could see the issue. But provided Caitlyn never returns to her old identity in sport and simply starts a new sports record from scratch under the name Caitlyn as a woman, this is a non-story.

The only thing I want to know is, can Caitlyn still claim that she won a medal and set a record and so forth seeing as she's no longer Bruce? Is there rules set in place about that ownership? Although, as I can't think of any trans atheletes, this rule may not be known or even formally written.
