Why can't they hire an actually gay actor????

It bothers me when people say stuff like this. If we keep everyone in boxes like that it just separates us from straight people even more. Plus, there would be a pure outrage if gay actors were limited to only playing gay roles.

It's true that LGBT people need more representation in Hollywood, but the solution to that isn't restricting other actors from taking up roles they're deemed right for.

I liked 127 hours

I like Neil Patrick harris, Zachary Quinto among many of my LGBT fave actors

I think acting roles should be given judged on talent and not on s-xuality

Considering even then they may give bad acting

That's the part I agree with. But it just seems somewhat inconsiderate to me. It would be nice to have somebody who's a member of that community and a great actor also play a role from the community. Like to transcend idendification beyond the movie.

Yes this way the audience can connect better

I guess we'll have to wait for a bit to have amazing LGBT actors

Not everyone can fulfill the required role, you know

they hire actors who can act well, not people based on their s-xuality

There are plenty of talented gay actors. I take offense to straight people playing these roles because what the **** do they know about the issue. It's just frustrating.

Just because you are not gay, doesn't mean you don't know what it feels like to be them

If it was that way, then a mother wouldn't know what it feels like for a child

Why do you want to even associate with straight people? Why should we continue to assimilate to straightness??

You recognize that LGBT people need more representation, James Franco playing this role does less help than not in helping that.

That's exactly what it means, actually.

White people can NEVER say they "know" what people of color go through.
Straight people can NEVER say they "know" what gay people go through.
Cis gendered people can NEVER say they "know" what genderfluid/transgender people go through.

What is needed is change in thought

Not who plays what role based on s-xuality

If the LGBT needs better representation, then there should be more better effort done, not role discrimination

If that was the case, then the media would be pigeon-holed and there would be a shortage in roles

By your knowledge, Gaga can't take a transs-xual role cause she was apparently never born that way

Why do I want to associate with straight people? Because I believe in equality and unity and humans functioning as a society together... We're already viewed as 'different' but we are beginning to make a lot of progress. We can't be embraced like that in society by shunning other people away who show an interest in our way of life - like Franco.

I want gay to be normal and accepted and by complaining about an actor simply playing a gay person isn't going to achieve that. The whole point of being an actor is that you're playing someone that is not you. That's literally the definition of it. For me this is as ridiculous as saying Meryl Streep should be condemned for being great at portraying people from so many different cultural backgrounds, and she should just stick to playing women from New Jersey. As a British person, I'm not offended that she, an American, played a Brit in The Iron Lady. As a gay man, I'm not offended that James Franco, a straight man, is playing a gay man in this movie.

I think Jared Leto did great as a trans woman in Dallas Buyers Club, and I think Hilary Swank did great as a trans man in Boys Don't Cry. I think James Franco, Tom Hanks, Sean Penn, Charlize Theron, Julianne Moore and so many others have played great roles as gay people too. But I also feel like Neil Patrick Harris, Jodie Foster, Ian McKellan, Sarah Paulson and many more have been equally great in roles as straight people.

It's of my belief that my s-xuality doesn't define who I am as a person, and if I were an actor I wouldn't want that to confine the roles available to me. And it shouldn't be like that for actors of any orientation. Equality.
