Mayor Ron Huldai of Tel Aviv has come out in support of same-s-x marriage and urges Israel to do the same. This comes days after the Republic of Ireland’s monumental marriage equality ruling by a popular vote.

While kicking off Tel Aviv Pride this Wednesday, Mayor Huldai told The Jerusalem Post:

"I think that the state of Israel can learn from Ireland, that just recently, in a referendum, approved gay marriage. I think that in the state of Israel, given the awakening that’s happening, it's important for there to be a city that says 'here, a person can live their life.'”

Mayor Huldai is largely responsible for Tel Aviv’s thriving LGBT community and tourism. In 2012, Tel Aviv was named the world’s best gay city by GayCities.com. This year’s Tel Aviv Pride is set to be the biggest yet in the city's history, with extra focus on the city’s transgender citizens.

Now that Ireland has legalized same-s-x marriage and Greenland followed in its lead, we can only hope that Israel isn't far from a similar ruling.

Conservative opposition to same-s-x unions in Germany is beginning to crumble after a referendum over the weekend legalised gay marriage in ultra-Catholic Ireland. EurActiv Germany reports.

Ireland's “yes” to same-s-x marriage has provided new impetus to the campaign for homos-xual rights in Germany. A growing number of Conservative politicians now support amending the country’s basic law to allow unions for same-s-x couples.

“It makes me certain, that we can also come to a process of reflection in the centre-right alliance,” said Stefan Kaufmann, an MP from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), speaking on the public radio station Deutschlandfunk.

“Recognising same-s-x marriage would have symbolic value for many homos-xual lovers and far beyond,” he also told the Tageszeitung. In the end, the deliberate separation of church and state in Germany will not result in any other outcome than that of the Irish in their referendum, he pointed out.

“One should be thinking: what the Catholic Irish can do, we can do too,” echoed Jens Spahn, a member of the CDU’s executive committee, speaking to Welt. “The population is often further along on these issues than we think,” he said.

The Association of Lesbians in the CDU is also pushing for the party to open up. “The clear ‘yes’ in Ireland is a sign. In Germany, and especially in our party, something has got to happen now,” the association’s director Alexander Vogt told Spiegel Online. He hopes that Angela Merkel will settle on a position far from blockers in the CDU.

Italy

Ireland's historic vote in favour of same s-x marriage reverberated across Italy on Sunday, as Prime Minister Matteo Renzi's lieutenants came out in force to call for fast-track passage of a stymied civil partnership law. 

Socially conservative Italy now is the only Western European country that does not recognize either same s-x marriage or civil unions. But that the Irish referendum garnered an unexpectedly strong 62 per cent "Yes" vote in such a deeply Catholic country rallied backers of the Italian law, which has been languishing in parliament for months. 

Several editorials on Sunday suggested that such a referendum in Italy would have a similar outcome, recalling the divorce referendum in 1974, when 60 percent of Italian voters went against the wishes of the Catholic church on a major social issue. 

La Repubblica reported Mr Renzi confided privately that in the wake of the Ireland vote the question of civil unions in Italy can no longer be put off. Many of his key cabinet members and key party allies spoke out in favor of swift passage of the proposed legislation.

"What joy," said Roberto Speranza, leader of Mr Renzi's centre-left Democratic Party of the result. "Now it is Italy's turn." "The moment has arrived, finally, to approve this before the summer's end," said Democratic Senator Andrea Marcucci. 

"Ireland is giving us a lesson in civility," said gay Italian politician Nichi Vendola, president of the Apulia region since 2005. 

Laura Boldrini, speaker of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, said Ireland was giving Italy a much-needed push forward. "It is time that Italy has a civil unions law," Ms. Boldrini said on Twitter. "To be European means to recognize rights."

As much as the reason for the vote is being misconstrued, it's good to see there being a positive effect from the gay marriage vote. Interesting how despite being only the twentieth country (or is it nineteenth) to legalise it, we're making more discussion points than most of the others 

I disagree with "ultra-Catholic" but that's minor, the abortion laws are admittedly completely outdated though, although from what I've seen, whilst there's a lot of staunch Catholic opposition to the legalisation of it, there's just as much non-Catholic opposition (or opposition from mostly secular people). 

We've always been influencing people anyway; just in different ways
