The Arab population was already living in Israel before any British mandate, how can you with a sane mind refer to "stealing Jewish homeland", that is pure insanity right there.

Between the years 1948 and 1952, thousands of babies, children of mostly Yemenite immigrants to the newly-founded State of Israel, were allegedly taken away from their parents and given up for adoption to Ashkenazi families. Now a group of activists is telling the stories of the traumatized families who vow never to forget.

The baby in the photo is younger than my Abigail. His name is Rafael – a tiny baby, seen here in his mother’s arms. She wandered from Damascus to Beirut and onto the shores of the promised land, before being placed in a tent in the Beit Lyd transit camp. Rafael is my mother’s younger brother. She traveled this long route along with him in a sailboat when she was one-and-a-half years old. Grandfather Mordecai wrote in his diary about what had happened to them when they arrived at the immigrant camp:

 

“One of the nights a horrible wind was blowing, and rain came pouring from the sky. The small children who slept with us in the tents became sick with colds, diarrhea and fever. The smallest one, five-month-old Rafael, got stomach poisoning, and so we went to Tel Aviv and took him to the government hospital in Jaffa, where he returned his pure and innocent spirit to God in the morning light of Tuesday, 13/9/49.”

 

In Donolo Hospital they wouldn’t let my grandfather see his son’s body nor his place of burial. They also refused to provide him a death certificate.

 

The three languages they spoke didn’t help my grandfather and grandmother who were religious and educated. They believed the doctors and sat shiva (a week-long mourning period in Judaism) in mourning. They couldn’t imagine being lied to; who could believe that in Israel of all places, Jews will kidnap the child of other Jews.

The Yemenite Children Affair only reached headlines in the 90s due to the uncompromising struggle of the late Rabbi Uzi Meshulam, who paid a big price for his campaign to reveal what truly happened to the children. Meshulam spent more than five years in prison after he and his followers barricaded themselves in his home in the city of Yehud with an arsenal of weapons, demanding the government set up a committee of inquiry. He was only released after becoming sick. Even after his release, Meshulam was forbidden from ever touching the affair again. He died two years ago, ill and alone.

 

The committee eventually cleared the establishment of any wrongdoing. It is not surprising that the state rids itself of responsibility, nor that right-wing organizations do not demand any real oversight in everything having to do with the affair.

 

However, the silence of left-wing Israeli organizations is both strange and surprising. During those years, babies were forcibly taken from their families — families who were told that their children had died — and handed over to “white” families (sometimes in exchange for money). This was done based on a racist worldview according to which Yemenis and Mizrahim in general are not fit or worthy of raising their own children.

 

However, the Yemenite Children Affair (in which children from Arab countries, as well as the Balkans, were also kidnapped) has never been prioritized by organizations who claim to represent the struggle against racism, human trafficking, discrimination and oppression. The silencing of those who have attempted to struggle for recognition and compensation for the victims; the destruction of documentation around the time of the committee’s investigation; and the strange decision to shut down access to the remaining documents for a period of 70 years — none of these rattled left-wing groups into action.

 

On Sunday, the anniversary of Rabbi Meshulam’s death, we mark the second annual Day of Remembrance and Awareness for the Yemenite, Balkan and Mizrahi Children Affair. The goal of the day is to raise public awareness over the continued silencing and denial of the affair, which took place during the first years after the establishment of the State of Israel. The parents, whose children disappeared after being taken to hospitals under the orders of medical teams, never received real answers regarding the whereabouts of their children. Families who were told that their children had died never saw a body nor a grave.

 

For decades families have been carrying this pain while searching for their kidnapped children. The children were “adopted” and many did not have the ability to find their original families. This year, Physicians for Human Rights – Israel joined the initiative, calling on the medical establishment to take responsibility for its involvement in the kidnapping. The fact that only one left-wing group has joined this important struggle, which has been taking place for many years now, teaches us about the Left’s blindness toward the oppression of Mizrahim in Israel.

Head of UN Gaza probe tells Haaretz: Main message is Israel can’t drop one-ton bomb on a neighborhood

Jurist Mary McGowan Davis tells Haaretz that committee members wanted to convey that Israel must reexamine its policy of using military might, says report would have looked 'very different' if Israel had cooperated.

 

American jurist Mary McGowan Davis, who headed the independent United Nations probe into the events of last summer's war in Gaza, told Haaretz in an interview that the main message committee members wanted to transmit is that Israel must reexamine its policy of using its military might, because it led to unprecedented destruction in Gaza and to the killing of about 1,500 innocent civilians.

“We wanted to make a strong stand that the whole use of explosive weapons in densely populated neighborhoods is problematic and that the policy needs to change,” she emphasized in a phone interview from Geneva, where she presented on Monday the findings of the months-long inquiry she conducted. “Because it is not OK to drop a one-ton bomb in the middle of a neighborhood.”

McGowan Davis received the task last March to head the UN Human Rights Council's investigation, after the chairman of the previous commission, jurist William Schabas, was forced to resign in disgrace because when emerged that he had failed to disclose that he had previously provided a legal opinion to the Palestinian Liberation Organization for a fee. Israel, which revealed this fact in a complaint, opposed Schabas because of his anti-Israel views – he once declared Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should be tried in the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

 

It’s hard to portray McGowan Davis as anti-Israel. A few years ago, when she headed a committee dealing with the implementation of the Goldstone report on Operation Cast Lead in Gaza, Israel decided not to boycott her and to cooperate with her on a limited basis. The report that McGowan Davis issued at the time was balanced; Jerusalem received it with satisfaction.

In recent weeks, as the report's publication date approached, there were increasing Israeli attacks against the committee she headed and against the UN Human Rights Council that appointed her. Netanyahu said a few days before the report's publication it would be a waste of time to read it, because the committee was biased against Israel.

“It wasn’t serious criticism of one’s work – first read it and then we can speak about the merits," she said. "It wasn’t personal attacks against me or my work but against the Human Rights Council. It’s not new and not really affecting me… I know Israel’s concerns [about the UN Human Rights Council] and I respect that.”

The fact that Schabas initially headed the commission only convinced Israel even more that the correct policy was to boycott it. Israel did not allow the committee to go to the Gaza Strip or to the Israeli communities surrounding the Strip, and refrained from any contact or connection, even indirect, with its members. Even after Schabas left and McGowan Davis took on the task, Israel did not remove the boycott.

 

“Israel has to decide what its interests are," she said. "We didn’t get cooperation from Israel so we found other ways."

An independent United Nations commission of inquiry released on Monday its report on last summer's Operation Protective Edge, finding evidence that both Israel and Hamas are guilty of committing war crimes during the war in the Gaza Strip last summer, and that the devastation caused by the IDF in the Palestinian territory was "unprecedented." Haaretz brings you six must-read takes on the findings:

 

Chemi Shalev argues that the UN report on Gaza will further embed Israelis in their isolated bunker. The all-out diplomatic assault against the inquiry’s findings, he writes, will safeguard Israel’s self-imposed repression of last summer’s atrocious carnage.

 

The heavy charges against Israel in the report warrant a probe, not self-righteousness, argues Amos Harel. The Gaza war report may seem more balanced than its predecessor -  a reference to the 2010 Goldstone Report on Operation Cast Lead  - but if Israel expends any more energy insisting it has the 'most moral army in the world' it will likely end up in The Hague.

 

Anshel Pfeffer discusses six takeaways from the report, including that, though it started as a sham, the final report is scrupulous, focusing equally on both Israel and Palestinians. Had Israel cooperated with investigators, he writes, maybe it could have gotten more favorable results.

 

Ilene Prusher focuses on Israel’s “roof-knock” procedure, in which a building is subject to a minor missile strike—a warning—followed by a truly destructive one a few minutes later, and explaining that many Palestinians did not understand the ‘knock’ when it came, nor did they know where to run, during the fighting last summer. The UN report says that Israel should have noticed early in the war that its roof-knock warnings were not nearly effective enough, argues Prusher.

 

Amira Hass, meanwhile, says that the report bolsters the Palestinian ICC camp. It was published on the day that the Palestinian unity government dissolved, yet shortly before the Palestinians depart for The Hague in a rare act of unity.

 

The report brings Israel's top leaders closer to The Hague, says Barak Ravid. The UN's report hints that after all other measures have failed, the ICC is the only thing that can actually deter the Israelis and Hamas from yet another round of fighting.

3. What was the currency of "Israel"? Shekel. It was the same currency the Israelites used 3,000+ years ago.
4. The word must derive from the ethnicity that founded it, so which was it? The Israelites. Israel was named after one of Abraham's sons, Jacob, which YHWH gave him the name Israel.
