The movie played in select theaters, it was properly released. 

The Oscar committee also votes on categories that deal with documentaries, not just major theatre releases. Every year, independent films and documentaries get recognized and get awards. 

I think you are confusing The Oscars with the VMA Awards or the Teen Choice Awards.
