Gaga's excuse was that the world wasn't ready. It's not like she was blind during the whole video, she did it. She knew the direction she was taking and came out with it, even if it wasn't her idea she shot it, promoted it and then changed her mind about it.

I hope it leaks someday and ARTPOP gets the attention it deserves.

​I really don't think DWUW was "attention whoring trash". I genuinely think it was a strong creative statement that was made in terribly poor taste.
