I still never got the whole "I don't want to be labeled, I'm an American, not African-American". Like, it's only one word longer.  Quote me if I'm wrong on this, I'm more than welcomed to be proven wrong but I can't see any other side to this. :smh:

I think what Raven means exclusively about "African-American" is that it puts a stigma on the person. Let's be honest here, how many white people do you hear calling themselves the equivalent of AA, which would be European American? None. It seems as if whites are the only ones that can call themselves "American" without being asked "oh, but where are you REALLY from?" or "where did your parents ACTUALLY come from?"

The terms on their own are embraced by many as a form of pride though. It depends on how you see it. Like Hispanic-American, Asian-American, etc. are all used as a source of heritage pride among people who's recent relatives are most likely immigrants.

As for American blacks, they have zero connection to Africa, so imo they deserve to simply be called "American"

I think that what she meant to say is that an American is an American, and we should not label other people just because of their race. I kind of agree with this. I mean, why don't we call white Americans Caucasian Americans?:thetea:

You mean, European Americans? :P  Otherwise we would be calling them (N word) Americans, which is the equivalent of caucasian american.  Idk really, so many labels. But I now get what she's saying and agree with it
