Luc 4,776
Chi already surpassed the US as the largest economy by economic activity when measured in PPP. But converting the currencies for now its still #2 as the same economic transaction in the US (say a service like a haircut) costs more than in China so in that sense the US is still bigger in "Nominal GDP" but even by that measure it will be surpassed Chinas population demographic dictates no growth in the coming years or even decline. But now they are a maturing economy with a growing middle class and rising wages. So even if their population declines by say 10% in the next 40 to 50 years... If the average Chineese only makes 50% of income an American does (which trends suggest is highly plausible) in total numbers with their still much higher pop their economy will be FAR larger than that of the US by any measure India is also really starting to emerge and accelerate in economic growth. Their population will far ecceed what China ever had because by the time China reached Indias population they already had measures in place to reduce pop growth. In India due to their culture thats not likely to ever happen. Their pop will keep growing and combine that with the fact that they are developing... in 40 years their economy will be huge... Most experts agree at some point in the Future the largest economy in the world will be India not China. China may surpass the US for a time but be surpassed by India shortly after As for Nigeria... it has the population demographics... it still lacks real development by comparison though. It has the potential for its GDP to explode ut it could also disapoint. We will have to see I can see in 50 years the largest economies being: #1 India#2 China#3 USA#4 Nigeria or UK Dont be surprised at UK. It has better demographics than most of Europe including Germany. And its economy is expected to far outperform the rest of Europe in growth for a number of reasons On the otherhand Japan will keep declining as theres no evidence that their shrinking population as well as other root causes causing stagnant growth will go away anytime soonAnd maybe the United States of Europe will be #1, with a population of 600 million.I also see Brazil as a worthy #4, and Indonesia too.Anyways, population growth will slow down India's per capita growth, and they have a structural problem with women (illiteracy, not working. Basically halving their gdp) and are less productive than Chinese.
