This is true. Many work and can only make minimum payments, putting them in debt for at least ten years. Student loans tend to have high interest rates.

I know very little about that.  Nobody in my world talks about an alternative to college.  I went to college and I finished a long time ago and I'm not going back so... I'm done worrying about what I will do, but, I might have thought more about that in the past.  What kind of jobs are they?  Do you mean construction and factory work?  It makes sense that it would pay just as much as office work.

​trades are jobs like:

 

-carpenters

-construction workers

-home builders

-welders

-mechanics

-electricians

-plumbers

 

all those and more fit into the category of the trades and most have a shortage of workers, and with most of the workers there being older, in the future there will be even more shortage. They dont require special courses, most you just need an apprenticeship where you work a certain number of hours before getting certified, but you get payed during your training!

 

So here in Canada they talk about that as an alternative to college and university if you dont want to go that route. They are good paying jobs that are in demand. The only catch is you have to be willing to work with your hands and some of them require a fair bit of physical labor...

 

Also they do require a certain level of skill and intelligence. While its not rocket science, you do have to use your brain a little, were not talking fast-food jobs here

The problem in the US is cost of tuition, and lack of jobs for graduates... the issue isnt not enough people studying

 

Here in Canada we got a simmilar issue, skills and educational mismatch... some types of jobs too many people are going into and is already very competitive and people waste time and money going to university and college for something that isnt needed and they are putting themselves in a position where it will be hard to find work

 

on the otherhand there are many jobs going unfilled in sectors and industries that have a hard time finding workers cause few people have the qualifications or are going into those fields

 

Both Canada and the US by looking at job openings in reality have enough jobs for the whole population. But some job openings simply will never be filled cause the people are either not interested in those jobs or arent qualified

We have that in the U.S. It's called scholarships!  That's how I made it through school without any debt!

Here in Canada tuition is a little cheaper than in the US. On the otherhand, we dont give out as many schollorships

 

either way student debt is an issue here too. Especially since we have the highest post secondary graduation rate in the world :P At least as of 2013 dont know if it changed

I just think that education should be accessible to everyone. If everybody has the same chances at finishing university (of course you'll require skills), a fair income distribution isn't really needed.

I think it needs to be cheaper. I dont know about free tho...

 

The cost makes ppl work harder and also think harder about what they wanna do...

 

the moment u made it completely free ppl would be more likely to slack (like they often do in highschool), or just try out something they think they might wanna do but then change their minds and do something else and they are costing Government money by changing minds or re-doing years because they got poor marks

 

so i support making pos-secondary cheaper. Not completely free tho. Tax payers would be on the hook for students that become less efficient!
