When Gaga uses different cultures you all applause her and belt "YASS GAGA" but when Katy does something everyone turns into annoying b---hy SJWs. StrawberryBlond 14,891
God, this is cringey. People think Gaga's concert speeches are cheesy, but this is on another level. I don't think Katy's racist, but I do think she displays a bit of "internalised racism" and falls back on stereotypes too easily. Treating Japanese people like cute babies or animals is one of the forms of stereotyping that's still accepatable today and it must be awful to a full grown adult and have someone your age or younger treating you like you're a little kid (I experience that enough, but never for racial reasons). Because Eastern Asians tend to look much younger than they actually are, treating them like kids is very easy for a Western person to do and they don't seem to realise how patronising it is. She was talking to them like a school teacher in an infant class and it's not like they need reminding of the language gap. It's not cute, it's annoying to not understand your favourite artist without doing some translation work: they don't need to hear a whole speech about it in concert. Japan is a country of very intelligent people, so it must be frustrating when a Westerner comes to sing for them and makes comments about wanting to come back in their next life as Japanese and saying random cliche Japanese phrases. Even if they can't understand every word, it's important to make your audience feel they're on your level and treat them as if they have intelligence. Could've been worse, though. She could have said that "skin them and wear them like Versace" comment as mentioned in the reply above me. Maybe she was making up for that gaffe.
